Title: Project Green Hornet
Post by: Cabrioman on July 3, 2017, 19:02
New MK3 was delivered today.   s:bounce: :bounce: s:bounce:

Had a look around and bodywork isn't too bad (apart from horrid stickers on the back) with a couple of marks. but look like they can be polished out.
Interior is good and roof needs it's ears removed   s:shock:  s:shock:
First job is to see if i can get it started.
I'm unsure about the battery (300A) but going to charge it anyway. I need new battery terminals as they're missing and i have the aerial to fit.
Depending on the outcome of trying to start it depends on a full engine rebuild or just a service. What ever happens, i will be sorting out the pre-cats.

Larger battery fitted,
Immob' light goes out and then turn the key
Most of the time you hear a clunk from the starter motor and that's it or on the very rare occasion it'll turn slowly.
Any Ideas?

Seized engine? Take the plugs out, squirt some oil in and try to turn the engine over on the crank sprocket bolt with a socket and breaker bar.

Or maybe bad earth from the battery strap?
Title: Re: Project Green Hornet
Post by: Essex2Visuvesi on July 6, 2017, 22:44
Check the alternator
Mine sat over the winter and the alternator seized making it impossible to turn over
Title: Re: Project Green Hornet
Post by: Cabrioman on July 7, 2017, 07:28
Cheers for the reply's.
I'm going to get a new battery as I don't think the one it is that good. Then I'll check the earth as it will try to turn over on the odd occasion. If not, I'll stick with the original plan and take the engine out. That way if there is an issue with the alternator etc... I'll be able to fix it while being rebuilt.

Got the engine started  s:) :) s:)
Sounds like a dog though.

Seems to be squeaking from the pulleys but i'm guessing knocking is the bottom end failing?
Any other thoughts?

Engine is now complete and moved back to the garage. I've refitted the fly wheel and exhaust manifold. I've started to prepare the engine bay and I'm struggling to remove the security torque screws from the ECU so I can remove the wiring loom. Engine bay stone chipped and prepped ready. Wiring loom removed and begun connecting to engine. Exhaust manifold fitted apart from 2 bolts which were too far gone.
Hoping to install this weekend and start by next weekend. :D(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180405/d07e3752833dadf0367f1874471fb267.jpg)

Some days are good days,.
Others, Not so much.
Struggled to get anything to do as it was told.
ECU all bolted in.
Rear shocks fitted with hubs temporarily bolted while waiting for paint.
Subframe started to be fitted but one bolt refuses to go in straight. Can't tighten it up without risk of breaking the thread and I'd rather know why it won't go in straight.
Rear arms just sitting there to see how it looks. Hi Cabrioman smart looking motor you have there ref x member bolts going in cocked I had a similar problem with my front x brace me thinks mister T uses a " Encapsulated locking medium"  Loctite to normal people, on critical  fixings. this leaves the threads dirty and easy to cross. I had to buy 12m fine tap to clean up one captive nut I now have 12m fine tap cost £20! standard one is only £6. if anyone wants to  borrow it I can post it cheers greybeardgt

Car is refusing to start since last weekend.

Bit of progress. I unplugged each coil pack individually and tried starting the car. Then i moved the coil packs around to check they're all working. I then unplugged each imjector individually and started the car to see if the engine changed at all. On unplugging injectors 2 and 3 the car sounded the same where as unplugging 1 and 4 the car refused to start. So Im guessing 2 injectors have failed. I then noticed petrol sitting around the injectors themselves. So it's either the injectors 2 and 3 are not working at all or the petrol is coming out instead of going into the engine.

This is so much like what I've just done it's untrue. Look for project black that's my thread on mine.

I had engine out rebuilt etc, put back In would not start checked spark checked injectors. All like you.

Then I pressure tested it and found down on pressure ! Had head fully rebuilt but the guy doing it said nothing really wrong with that. Then he asked my make of head gasket and said they are rubbish use this.

Bolted head back on and it started ( took some cranking mind )

So is it running on 2 cylinders or not running at all?
It's been off the road a while, how old is the fuel? Did you run it without a fuel filter?

It feels like it's running on 2 hence it starts and then dies.
Does anyone know if no brake fluid or clutch fluid would give me starting issues?

Still having starting issues. Definitely fuel related though as I have leaks around injectors. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180428/170f374a87d0cc613ed0b782264fee5d.jpg)

We have a bit of progress.
Fuel leak is sorted.
Cleaned pressure regulator and changed the seals on the replacement I and no fuel leaks but still not running.
Took the spark plugs out and 1 and 4 were black but 2 and 3 were clean.
Also installed a Bluetooth OBD 2 reader and it's telling me coil packs 2 and 3 are faulty.
Going to replace the spark plugs 1st and then recheck and if no joy I'll start testing the coil packs.

I read that as errors communicating between ECU and coil packs.
Has the loom to the coil pack possibly been damaged? Crushed, stretched etc?

Funny that it's not firing on the off cycle. 1 fires, 3 doesn't, 4 fires, 2 doesn't. Based on which are clean and dirty. 1 and 3 are black so incomplete burn.

A timing test would go a long way

How would I do a timing test?

Visual unfortunately.
Although I did see a clip of someone using a timing test light on coilpacks.

In hindsight, and looking at the codes, ecu or wiring seem most likely. Could be as simple as a ground issue.
Ignition requires a pretty solid ground. I think (don't hold me to this) it's the ground wire that goes from the back right of the engine to the body. Short black/white wire I think
Worth a quick check?

EDIT: wrong. It's the ground on the left of the block, under the pcv valve/pipes

I checked the earth's yesterday and they were nice and tight. Error codes are bank 2 and bank 3 P1305 P1310. Cleared and tried again but still no joy.
Swapped coil packs over with 1 and 4 but still same error codes.
I'm thinking a sensor or the ECU but if it was a sensor, wouldn't I get an error code for it.

What sensor would it be? The feedback from the coils is from the coils themselves. They return a "I've fired" message.
If you've got a tester ecu on the way, that'll eliminate either ecu or wiring. Or you could test the actual ecu output manually.

Thinking maybe crank sensor, cam sensor or VVT sensor.
I'll give the new ECU a try and hope that solves it. If not then I'll have to go through wiring I guess.

They all throw a hissy fit if they don't get what they're expecting. Or rather, the ecu does.

Hopefully the ECU will sort it.
Fingers crossed.

Replacement ECU fitted and all running again. :)
Wired in rear camera, fitted rear bumper and lights, fitted rear storage boxes and tidied under frunk.
Still need to finish brakes and clutch but waiting for tools.
Should be complete either next weekend or weekend after.
Then put it through an MOT to see what other jobs need doing. Car moved under its own steam for the first time since being garaged a year ago.
Clutch seems a little soft at the moment but hoping to borrow someone's car tomorrow to compare [emoji6]
All brakes are now replaced. Just need to replace the bleed nipples and bleed the system.
Gutted it's not ready for tomorrow but Rome wasn't built in a day [emoji6]

Well, I've done as much as I can.
Needs to be put through the MOT now to see what I have missed. Well.
It failed.
On the handbrake and a tyre which isn't bad. Especially as it's been off the road since 2016.
Returned to home now so I can sort out the small jobs.
Re-test next week and then time to start playing. :)
In the mean time, I'll start cleaning as this also hasn't been done since 2016. So the whistle has been found. Turns out I had the breather hoses the wrong way around :(
But runs fine now :D
Wheels have had some black paint thrown at them to make them look aylt least a bit better than the corroded paint that was on them.
Covered nearly 400 miles on the new engine.
Just need rear tyres replacing and change the oils again at 500 miles before the journey to Wales :)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180804/34fbb630687bdd5399ab514b46557ac5.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180804/441278901d5ec5245b00f0711995202f.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180804/07012d04b307a97d273e0679d51bb8bd.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180804/508d1173a075976f762d199da7c3587b.jpg)
