Title: New Arrival - Black '53 Reg Roadster - "BabyTwo" - Now with Photos
Post by: budfox on July 28, 2017, 13:50
Well it's been a few years since I sold my Island Green Roadster (Baby - nobody put her in the corner) and today I've agreed a purchase on a replacement. I must confess to being tempted to a MX-5 purely for the convenience of the boot space, but at the price I wanted to pay (up to £3k) I just know I'd be buying something that would rot away over the next couple of years.

I'll be picking it up this afternoon and will get some pictures on here over the next few days.

Very excited.  s:D :D s:D

OK well BabyTwo is now on the drive and she is rather lovely. It's raining though so no pictures this evening.

The car has covered 72k miles and has had eight main dealer services and one independent. Tyres on the front are brand new but not a good brand. Tyres on the back are nearly new Falkens.

I noticed a bit of steering wobble at around 65MPH so when I have a few more pennies I'll get rid of the rubbish tyres and have a proper balance/alignment done.

The fog lamps have got that annoying crystalisation in them and one of the headlights is a little yellowed. Apart from that all is very good.

I'm just the third owner and all three keys are present and correct.

Happy bunny all round and the car cost just £1850.

As soon as funds allow new tyres and full alignment otherwise I'll send the boys round.
Ok?

Hey bud, welcome back and good choice on colour  s;) ;) s;)

9 services in 14 years sounds a bit worrying however...

Yes well the service history isn't fantastic, but it does have a complete main dealer history until 2010 (to 55k miles) and then I have receipts for just two services since then, last one done in 2015 at 70k miles. It probably had an oil service when the previous owner bought it at 66k miles from a dealer in 2014. Better than no history at all I guess. I have all the old MOT certs too, along with the receipts for the MOTs (Hardly a big deal, but it's nice when people keep receipts I think).

Anyway, it's an £1850, two previous owner car. (Lady as first owner for 11 years). It's in lovely condition and if I have a few repair bills during my years of ownership then so be it. I doubt ownership will cost me anything like the depreciation on a newer car and honestly, I can't wait to get the roof down and drive down to the south cost with Mrs Budfox for a spot of lunch.

Fingers crossed you should be ok expect the 1st owner showed it some love maybe not so much the 2nd rubbish tyres is a sign of skimping on maintenance but at that price as you say not a bad deal overall
Get out and enjoy I can recommend Poorboys Black Hole for the bodywork  :-) :-) :-)

OK, now we have a few photos. It was cleaned when I picked it up, but then it rained all the way down the M5. I don't like red seats but hey, you can't have everything. The wheels need a refurb so I'll probably get that done when better tyres go on along with a proper alignment.

The sound deadening in the engine compartment is torn at the top, so I did a temporary bodge with tape to keep it from tearing some more.

With regard to the above I think the previous owner did look after it. He only covered 6k miles in three years and he was a very genuine chap, quite old and was genuinely pleased that he was selling to someone who had owned one before and would look after it. Nice to actually meet the previous owner I think. The tyres are cheap ones but I can forgive that, the car really is very tidy and the engine sounds really sweet. No rattles, no real marks to speak of, and overall I'm really very pleased.

Thanks. I think my Island Green one was the best colour of all, but this time round my only colour requirement was "not silver".

I'm getting tired of people disliking silver, why?  It stays cleaner for longer, doesn't show stone chips, marks, etc.  I just don't get it!    s:? :? s:?   Ok, my favourite is Chilli red but please stop getting at "silvers"' at the end of the day they are still a 2!    s8) 8) s8) . By the way, your new 2 looks very nice.

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound negative about silver, I mean I have one. Just my personal preference is black, is all. No offence intended   s:oops:  s:oops:

The only thing wrong with silver is that it's so good.
That's why there are so many of them.
And that's why they have so many hater's.
Like Man Utd.
P.S.
Yellows best.

I didn't mean any offence on my "not silver" comment, it's just that so many other cars out there are silver. I can see why people like it from a practicality point of view, but it just doesn't do it for me.

The sable colour though, which is not that much different really, is a drop-dead gorgeous colour for a Roadster.

That's a tidy looking car and sounds like you got it for a very reasonable amount of money!

Yes it really is in lovely condition. Very original indeed. All I can see that needs attending to are the usual problems with crystallisation in the fog lights, the wheels needing a refurb and a bit of yellowing on the driver's side headlight.

It is overdue a service (based on time, not miles) so I think that's the first thing to spend money on after I've done a couple of tanks of fuel  :-) :-) :-)

Will do some more pics in a nice location on a sunny day.

Thanks for everyone's comments.

OK, well just a quick few words about my first proper chance to drive the car today. (Waited until 1st August to tax it). It was a 60 mile round trip to Woodbury Park in Devon, across the Blackdown Hills, through Dunkeswell and then to my destination via Honiton.

Such fun! Had the roof down all the way despite a bit of rain. Discovered a minor rattle in the driver's door and similar from the glove box. I also remembered that I can put the hood down from within the car but not put it up again.

The handling remains a joy, the gearbox sublime and I'm even learning to like the red seats. The only negative for me is that I also recall from my previous ownership that the car really could do with just a bit more power. I'm never going to do anything about that, I'm not an engine-swapping kind of person, but whilst the engine is a free-revving bundle of fun, it does lack a little punch. (Between my previous Roadster and the one I had now, I owned a 3.0Si Z4 Roadster. That really did have some power but I just didn't enjoy it).

I'll give the car a lovely clean soon, then take it somewhere nice for some better photos. I think I'll also go for the Toyota £200.00 service deal for older cars.

I've certainly decided that this will be a car that I only drive on nice days. The rest of the time it can live in the garage so something like 4k miles per year seems likely.

Finally, insurance. Aviva were happy to apply my existing no-claims to this car as well, so with me and the wife having three cars, the extra cost until December came in at just £45.00. (Other cars are an Aygo and a Leaf so that's quite a result. Having said that, we're in our 50's which seems to be a very sweet spot for insurance costs).

You can  s:) :) s:)  but not without sliding the seat all the way back. reach your arms over and behind your head, and pull up and over - i'm 5'6", so short, but i can manage. I just learned this trick recently  s:D :D s:D

Took the car for a proper drive today, from Wellington and across the Quantock Hills to Watchet. Not the nicest of roads but the bit from Milverton to Wiviliscombe does allow for a nice bit of spirited driving:

 m https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.03613 ... 312!8i6656 (https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.0361393,-3.272467,3a,75y,300.4h,74.46t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s6F7Rb-KgMxttUxpmZBO8tA!2e0!7i13312!8i6656) m

Plenty of sunshine along the way, and we were going to get the steam train from Watchet to Dunster, a total of seven miles. But they wanted £12.00 each so I thought "For £24 I can hoon there in the car, we can have tea and a sandwich, hoon back again and still be in pocket. Sorry West Somerset railway, your pricing sucks.

Anyway, the drive did throw up a funny clicking sound when depressing the clutch (see my thread in maintenance) but it was still great. Does anyone else's other half try and use brake pedals that don't exist on the passenger side?
