Title: The 4 pipe Cobra effect..
Post by: Ac1962 on September 14, 2020, 14:00
So, i need some comments please guys, i have a Cobra 4 pipe silencer, 2 outlets either side of the car - of these the outerones always look darker than the inner ones - im guessing its just preferential flow sending more exhaust gas to the outer ones - path of less resistance and all that, so, is there really any need for the inner ones - was this or is this just a Cobra design inadequacy? any other Cobra users get the same?

Most likely as you say, flow taking path of least resistance. I believe the Cobra tips are just that- tips that split at the end just behind the bumper. You can probably easily change them to a single outlet each side: Something like this should work https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Car-Universal-Round-Silver-Stainless-Steel-Chrome-Exhaust-Tail-Muffler-Tip-Pipe/143689677666?epid=0&hash=item2174927b62:g:wcAAAOSwcB5cx~Wi  Check dimensions obviously!
Or just drive up to a local exhaust fitter they should be able to do it from a choice of styles cheaply and within minutes.

On a personal opinion note I think 4 pipes on a MR2 is a bit OTT...does it really need one per cylinder lol? I say this coming from an Abarth with factory quad pipes where it kind of fits the outrageous styling and nature of the car somewhat more. Two pipes on '2 is fine and apes the TTE so all good :)
IMO of course!

I've just got my first 'roadster' - it has a cobra 4 pipe - I've notticed that the outers have started to wear through their  perforated inners - so will be have to replace them at some point.

You may have found that I have fitted a Tsurikawa and Hello Kitty combo. The effect is a huge boost for the Chilli Girl feel good.

I'm having to roll the last 100 yards into the village...
<sacrilege> Is it possible to quieten down a cobra exhaust by adding some baffle or  PERFORATED STAINLESS STEEL tube and wadding in the tail pipe? </sacrilege>

People usually sell and go back to stock or tte if they find them too loud.

Serves you right for driving a mazda!

The TTE depending on age and rest of the exhaust can be very loud I think.
I think mine is actually very loud, but to be fair I have done everything I can to make it loud; zero manifold (wider pipes), 200 cell with 2.5in and TTE where the wadding has probably been blown out the back many moons ago.

Cobra, if I remember correctly, had more of a loud raspy note.
The TTE definitely grumbles more low down.

You can hear my rumbles coming down the road from quite a distance, and then followed by a series pops and bangs on overrun.
Driving through our town center certainly gets attention.
