My car has been extensively sprayed underneath with a kind of plastic coating.
All this has done is trap water against the chassis.
Obviously found its way in from above.
It looks OK until you scrape a bit off and water drips out.
Much better to have been wire brushed and painted.
Recently done mine underneath and slowly working my way through the suspension/arms etc.
A Combination of a wire wheel on the grinder and a small wire brush got the most of the small patches of rust off. Then used some rust treatment/killer and finished off with a thin coat of waxoyl.
Using hammerite on the metal arms etc.
Patience is needed ;D
I was surprised to see how much water was trapped between the undercoating and the chassis rails on Scotte's yellow V6 car. We were cleaning and scraping the spot where we were attaching a brace and it poured out- not a few drops, almost a flow! A sure way to rot out important parts of a car's structure.
So apart from looking awful, it does the car no good in the long term. That's a project forScotteover the summer months.
Yep - wire brush, rust treatment, zinc primer (2 coats) and then paint. It's more work, but it gives reliable and lasting results.
The ex-Stewart@borough TF300 (now owned by Scotte) is about to get the full treatment at our workshop. It hasn't been coated, thankfully, but it is in need of some real TLC underneath. It's only surface rust, but there's a lot of it. I'm confident we can get her back to looking like she should.
I've gradually been working through various bits doing just this, just finished the front braces and rails. Hopefully saves some headaches later on.
That does look tidy.

What you don't see is the crusty roll bar that I have conveniently left out of shot... The braces and rails did look pretty rough but after some brushing there was still solid metal underneath.
