Title: Decent tig welder
Post by: jvanzyl on March 3, 2022, 18:11
So I want to buy a tig welder for the purpose of having a go at making exhaust and intercooler pipe work. Plus whatever else life might throw at me..

Thoughts on the below? It's likely the most I'd want to spend.

If you want to do decent Tig welding, you need argon gas.

'TIG' stands for Tungsten Inert Gas.

'Gasless' is a dead end.  We have a machine that can do TIG gas welding, but we can't justify keeping a decent sized bottle of argon (on monthly rental), so we fit and tack-weld stuff and then take it to our local friendly professional TIG welder.

Thanks @Carolyn - in your view how much of a drop is there in standard/quality if you use cheaper alternative gases? I think I've seen some people using smaller/cheap bottles?

Hi, @jvanzyl ,

Believe me, if there was away to get decent results without argon, we'd be doing it.  The smaller bottles are only filled to 200 bar instead of 300,if they are argon and are not a good deal.  Mixed argon and CO2 is really for mig (metal inert gas).

For most jobs, (tack welding and seam welding) where it doesn't have to be pretty, Mig is fine and a good answer for the home mechanic.

Fair enough- so if your tig is just gathering dust, let me know if you wish to part with it 😉 though I'm assuming yours is going to be rather high end compared to the budget side I'm looking at for giggles if I'm honest.

I bought a Chinese copy from a website called Vevor, it was £450 but was an AC/DC TIG and was decent enough.

Believe it was that https://m.vevor.co.uk/tig-welder-c_10066/vevor-tig-welder-ac-dc-aluminum-welder-220v-3-in-1-welding-machine-tig-mma-arc-p_010990658977?gclid=CjwKCAjwiuuRBhBvEiwAFXKaNOP3oLv3CSrIfdUlOAGNrLuA-TLQ5po5d_0r2-o9dm9hXcZwOaz3LRoCIBoQAvD_BwE
