Title: Corky's breast plate..
Post by: aaronjb on June 12, 2005, 09:38
Fitted this yesterday - well.. more like Stu (kanujunkie) fitted it actually, thanks Stu  s:) :) s:)

Wow.. it really does make a huge difference to the car! I didn't expect it to make that big a difference really, but it's like driving a different car.. Almost like putting the hard top back on, in fact.

Can't wait to get the TRD member braces on as well now and see what it's like with those as well  s:) :) s:)

Welcome to the Evangelical Church of Corky. Hard to believe such a small piece of metal can do so much. This is the first mod any owner should contemplate, after the precats are sorted out. The lower arm braces and strut tower bar also help, but you won't see this big of an improvement from them.

I am still waiting on mine, but hoping it makes all the difference that everyone says it does.

You really,really should  s:) :) s:)

For anyone that knows this route - I came back from Mark's down the A1 to the Hatfield tunnel, then turned off and cut across on the 414, down to the M25 that way.. There's a bit of road off the penultimate roundabout before the M25 (anticlockwise) there that is really bumpy (I mean, huge lumps)..

Before I had this on the car used to crash, bang and lurch violently all over the shop over that.. And now it just rode over it   s:shock:  s:shock:  An absolutely amazing difference..

Came down to Slough via the A355 (off the M40) as well, as that has a really really nice left-right-left combo on it, which was fantastic at that time with the Corky plate on  s:) :) s:)

Although it did make me realise.. I'm probably going to be the slowest one on track at Elvington  s:lol:  s:lol:  I'm sure the car had a good 15mph in it around those corners..

I wish mine was here big time.

Why oh why did I wait for power coating, the normal one would have done and it's paid for now, so I will just have to wait.

I WILL!!! I have been meaning to get one for about 2 years now. Someone even offered me one and I was all ready to do the deal, but something cropped up which meant I had to spend money elsewhere, so I missed out. Gutted!

I will get one though. I now have to trawl through all the posts on this to find out how to purchase one!........

Bugger.........

Yep - Stu and I (well, I did help at one point  s:D :D s:D ) did it by just laying on the ground next to the car..

If your car is lowered, you'll probably need to jack it up a bit and use axle stands, but if it's stock ride height you'll be fine.

All i did with mine was jack it up a little, was a bit of a stretch, but i did it in the end.  Would have been easier had i not decided too do it in the rain, but my eagerness got the better of me  s:) :) s:)   Plus had a few strange looks from neighbours looking at the silly man lying in a puddle in the road  s:) :) s:)

Here's the link to order a plate:

http://www.spyderchat.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=19361

Looks like he's offering them in several colors, too. To answer nic's question, the standard explanation is as follows. First, lower the top and open both doors. Now squat down alongside the car and note the amount and shape of the metal that connects the front and rear wheels. You may notice that there isn't much there.

The four wheels of the Spyder flex the chassis at different rates, twisting the body much like you could flex a paper plate if you were holding it in front of you with both hands. Corkey's plate helps to bind the chassis both front-to-back and side-to-side, radically reducing the amount of flex. As a result, the driver gets much better feedback from the wheels, the car's more planted, rattles and shakes disappear, and when you take the car in for service, the tech will make remarks like, "What the hell is that??"

I can never understand why a massive company like Toyota don't fit a similiar design to the 2's as standard  s:? :? s:?

QuoteI can never understand why a massive company like Toyota don't fit a similiar design to the 2's as standard
Doesn't make any sense, does it? One thing, though. It's occurred to me that chassis flex may not necessarily be a bad thing. Bracing up the car seems to enhance some of its more "squirrely" characteristics. I'm getting that from zauskycop and others on the racing circuit. Adding performance also adds to the requirement for driver skill and perhaps Toyota intentionally wanted the car to be a touch more forgiving. Or maybe they were just saving money.

Just put mine on (10min job, don't know what took Stu so long on Saturday   s:wink:  s:wink:  ), and took it out for a spin.

It was worth every penny.   s:D :D s:D

Like southerneditor said, it gives you a lot more feel and certainly gives the car that slightly harder 'edge' it's always needed.

Seconded.  I don't have a Corky's, and have avoided it as a mod because of the likely impact on my insurance (as  the '2 is my daily drive and I'm potentially driving up to  20k a year on business, it would probably get silly).

Often, mine feels 'squirrely', but no evidence of any excitement from the TC light or buzzer in the cabin.  Clearly, nothing too untoward has happened if the disco effects don't fire up.  I think the 'squirrely' feeling is more likely the car flexing, and drawing attention to the fact that the drive, and the bigger half of the weight is behind my left shoulder.  A reminder, if you like.

I don't mind that it doesn't step out of line, I like being reminded that my car could put me in the scenery if it wanted to, and that I need to pay attention to what I'm doing.  It's part of the 'character' of the car.  It's possible that this was 'designed' in from the start by the  allegedly 'very keen on karting' MR2 design team.  It might be just a coincidence that the lack of proper rigid compoenents has help keep it 'cheap' too  s;-) ;-) s;-)

Fitted my breastplate at the weekend, have since done about 500miles.  Not that impressed with the results, will be taking it off tonight and putting the oe back on.
Could it be just too much with the front and rear tower braces and che lower front brace?  Now feeling all the bumps and it seems to skip a little.

The OE are such piddling bits of steel, if you think the breast plate is no good, would you consider going commando? Nobody else has said they have, perhaps you can be the first?   s:shock:  s:shock:  Then we can have a full summary of the advantage (or otherwise) of bracing amidships.

Personally I just cannot see how your car could be worse. Maybe the "bumps" are more solid, I'll give you that, but IMO there is %%%% less scuttle shake, creaking etc. It was only 200 yards before I confirmed the advantage, perhaps you ought to give it a bit longer?
Title:

Quote from: "Bowman"Now feeling all the bumps and it seems to skip a little.

I'm not an expert on suspension geometry, but this makes some sense... as you make it more rigid, any bumps are going to be transmitted across the whole car, rather than just localised, unless the suspension struts manage to catch and absorb the whole movement.  And of course what's transmitted isn't always going to be absorbed at the other 3 corners, so may well cause some sort of lift, and hence skip.

Due to the good weather I've been lazy and not changed yet.  I wil leave it on for the weekend as we are off to the lake district fro the weekend.  This should give me a better idea if my "feelings" are correct.
My current feeling is that the car does need to flex a little and perhaps this is just a brace too far.
Would fitting lowering springs have a good or bad effect. [all opinions welcomed]  s:lol:  s:lol:

I guess it's down to personal taste and how you want the ride to be.. After all, if we all wanted cars that rode like gokarts, nobody would buy a family hatch  s;) ;) s;)

I'd say, though, that if you dislike what the brace does to the suspension feel, you'll hate what lowering (esp. if they are a higher spring rate) springs and/or harder shocks do to the car..

i say bring on the go-karts, lower, harder, less flexi ride the better, i do agree though that a bit of flex in the chassis is required, otherwise teeth would fall out for a start not to mention the car slideing all over the road. On the other hand though i dont even think the sportivo or Tein kit would even come close to being a problem, except for the teeth bit.

Quote from: "Mat.B"I was just wondering if you have heard anything more from Corky?

Corky recently produced a batch of one piece front strut tower braces (solid, not hinged).  He may not be home much for a while because it was barely a week ago that his MR2 became the first SMT with a Hass Stage 2 turbo (stock hp x 2).  Chances are the top, and the pedal will be down for a while.

Due to almost universal agreement on the value of a breastplate, I had one of his with me when I went to pick my Spyder up from the dealer.  An Autopower roll bar also went on the first day (mounting conflicts with hardtop, but it also acts as a chassis brace).  I still need to paint and install my Corky's front strut tower brace, but I have been planning to do that alongside some other modifications on the front end.

Adding hp increases the value of extra bracing.  The more you push it into the corners, the more you will agree it was money well spent.  If you drive your MR2 like the family sedan you won't need aftermarket braces.

Sorry to resurrect this old thread but fitted my Corky's saturday night and the difference is nothing short of amazing. Even Deb noticed that my 2 seemed more rigid. Due to it being wet out yesterday I've not really had chance to throw my 2 about but I'm sure it will enhance the drive.
What took me so long to get one of these.
Oh and I was surprised at the "bits of tin" Toyota fit as standard...

directly underneath the centre of the car you'll find 2 flimsey bits of metal. The corkies plate replaces these with one large plate.

well there is nowhere else to to get those from as they are made by corky.

Cusco make one and there is a companay (name eludes me) who make them in italy, however corkys builds on all teh previosu attempts, and improves them.

to be honest for a nice thick piece of aluminium, with diagonal welded bracing (welding aluminium si a specialist skill) it's a bargain.

The company in Italy is http://www.lmcorse.com/. The chap i dealt with was called Claudio and very helpful. Nicely fabricated piece of kit. Does exactly the same job as Corky's.
Was very effective in improving my 2's road manners, it's a 2000 model, so really benefitted from this mod.  s:) :) s:)

Due to it being wet out yesterday I've not really had chance to throw my 2 about but I'm sure it will enhance the drive.
What took me so long to get one of these.
Oh and I was surprised at the "bits of tin" Toyota fit as standard...

First dry day since I fitted my Corky's, so took the 2 for a spin and the handling is so much sharper feels amazing  s:D :D s:D
If your thinking about getting one, stop thinking and start buying

Technically yes, as it's a modification and should be declared to your insurance company.

Whether you want to tell them is up to you. If the worst happened, would they look under the car and be able to tell that it's not a stock part? Possibly not, but if they do then your insurance is invalid and you're screwed.

FWIW, I declared mine.

may do over there, over here my insurance only noted it as it had no increase on Bhp. No premium increase applied. But do phone your insurance before and check

I'm amazed, I just fitted my corky plate in 15 mins.  Thats the quicked mod ever!  The thing that really got me was 10mins of that time was consumed by me getting the socket set out my focus (which is bunggied down to the max) and getting the MR2 on the ramps.  It only took me 5 mins to remove the old and install the new!  And I didn't swear throught the whole process which is rare to say the least!  Now I guess I best drive the damn car and give an opinion....

Ha! your not wrong, it arrived this morning and as the sun is out I slapped it on quick and just been for a blat in the country  s:D :D s:D
Some of the rough bumpy nasty roads that made me cringe last week are now fine, just as you would expect a modern car to be. It seems amazing that something so cheap and easy to change makes such a difference to the car as a whole. Anyone thats been thinking about doing this but hasn't yet need to pull their thum out their bum and get onto corky ASAP,

Quote from: "loadswine"Here is a pic of the lmcorse plate alongside the OEM item.
I think the aluminium is 6mm thick.

That is an attractive bit of kit from the Italian company. Just looking at their website and despite some of the stuff being translated, the description of this is no.

It looks like they do two - one 'standard' one 'racing'. One seems to be like the item in the picture above - and the other seems to have less holes. At euro 65-75, they seem like good value and I fancy my chances of getting one quicker (need some chassis rigidity - and fast!)

Do you know which you have (racing vs standard)?

DO you recall what you paid in shipment and how easy they are to deal with? - with regards to making payment. I am hoping for a response from them, but the language barrier seems to be making things a weee bit
tricky!

Chris

Just a muppetry question re. breastplates..

Do they use all existing anchor points and existing bolts from the weedy bracing? - so no drilling, just a socket set job?

Thanks

These ones look to be a better option with the extra bracing on the TTET install where the Corky has to be removed.

Does anyone know the dimensions for the six mounting holes i.e. between centres and diameter, on the LM Corse or Corky's plate?  Also, what's the material thickness of Corky's plate that the x-bars are welded to?

The reason for this, as you might be able to guess, is that I want to ask a guy I know to make me one, so I need to know at least the hole centre dimensions.  Any help greatly appreciated.  Hope I'm not being too cheeky.

By the way, regarding the LM Corse plate: according to an email they sent to me, both of their plates have the same rigidity, but the 'racing' one is lighter, due to using "a different working process".  Shipping to the UK is about 25 Euros.   They also sell hardtops by the way.

Thanks,
Jez

If you're going to do it yourself/have one made, you might as well bother going under the car to measure it.  s;) ;) s;)

It's just that if anyone knows, or has the opportunity to measure one off the car, it will be a more accurate measurement than I would get lying underneath the car with tape measure in hand !

Finally put my Corky's plate and Che's member brace on today.  Was putting the C-One rear braces on when it started to pour buckets.  Right now the car is on jack stands and everything is underneath it out of the rain.

Quick question: The Spydermagazine instructions for installing the TRD member braces (which are pretty much identical to the Che/C-One combination but about twice the price) say that the car has to be laden with 240lbs of passengers.  It's not clear whether this is just for the final bolt-tightening or what.  It's also not clear whether the instruction applies to both front and rear member braces or only the rears: the author seems to imply that it's only for the rear braces.

Anyone know the answers to these questions?  Also, how important is having the car fully laden when doing the final tightening?
Title:
Post by: markiii on April 17, 2006, 16:11
it realy only applies to teh rears, and even then I necver found it neccessary

teh front is easy, no wait needed.

Thanks, Mark.

Now I'm having a bit of difficulty figuring out where the rear braces attach.

This picture

shows what, on our cars, is the driver's side.  The left of the picture is the front of the car and the right is the rear.  Now, what I'm having trouble with is which bolt the rear part of the brace attaches to.  The only bolt that is there is very long and already connects another brace that is visible just to the right of the yellow box in the picture.

Am I to disconnect and reconnect that existing brace?

Anyone have any links to clearer pictures?

Had to give up on the rear member braces today as the wind and rain got the better of me.  Just as well: gave me a chance to drive the car with just the Che front and the Corky breastplate.  Wow!  Tightens everything up significantly.

In the meantime, here are some clearer pictures I found (by doing a search):

Just got around to fitting my Corky's yesterday (how many months has it been on the garage shelf?  s:oops:  s:oops: )

I have to say that, having read how much more stiffness is built into the later cars at the factory, I was expecting the Corky's not to make much difference to my 2005 car.  How wrong I was!

I haven't pushed the handling (the wife was in the car yesterday evening), but the behaviour over bumps is soooooo much better.  I had become used to the car skipping, shaking, and just feeling a little 'disconnected' over bumps.  Now, with the Corky in place the car just feels so much more solid, and the ride gives the impression that the weight of the car has doubled.  Wow!
