My son is having his TT mapped this weekend, he will supposedly get a 19% increase in the BHP and torque increase of 45%, sounds good but not something I have ever thought of doing.
Say it with love, say it with flowers but never, never, say it in writing.

No.....it's a 'sealed' ECU.  To get more power needs a piggy-back or standalone ECU.

Carolyn

Best not to mess with the engine electronics.  Even with piggy-backs there's very little to be gained.

not many.
Most ECUs keep a "flag" on them when they're modified though. It's more for manufacturers to determine whether they have grounds to deny a warranty claim but I'm sure insurers would be more than happy to use it to see whether a car was mapped.

BUT...time is money. Insurers are all about money. Making it. Not spending it. THey spend very little time investigating a claim unless a lot of money is involved.
I.e. if you crash into another car, then into as central reservation and take a light out. You better believe they're going to do all they can do prevent from being liable for paying out
...neutiquam erro.

Very little if anything to fain even if our ecu liked it.
With turbo engines it's well worth it.
Diesels even more so.

Already covered. But in a nutshell. No.

In a sense I take comfort from that. 20 years and no one has hacked/cracked the Toyota ecu.

For a typical natuarally aspirated road car the gains are minimal.

Turboed cars a different story.

I had an Audi S4 MK1 (1.8 Turbo) 15yrs ago, and took that from 225bhp to 295bhp with an uprated inlet manifold and mapping - transformed the car.

I had a M135i 5yrs ago (3.0 Turbo), and gained over 100bhp from mild modification and mapping (322bhp to 430bhp). With an LSD installed it made the car an absolute weapon!

I had my Transit (2.2 TDi) mapped and gained 55bhp - made the van so much better.

However on the 1ZZ MR2, I'd be surprised if you could eek another 10bhp out a standard engine. Unless you're chasing 1/10ths on a track - I wouldn't see the point.

As has been said only way is piggyback or whilst derided as old tech, Apexi Power FC ECU is plug and play and combined with a few mods makes a decent output

Crower Stage 1 Cams (MonkeyWrench USA)
Fidanza lightweight flywheel
Zero - 4 into 2 Equal Length, tuned collector, Manifold SS.
Silverstone Performance De-cat pipe, fitted with 200 CEL Sports Cat.
Moroso Racing sump (baffled and extra capacity)
Blueflame Custom Twin Exhaust.
PPE Cold Air Induction system
Apexi Power FC (ECU) with Commander hand controller
Up graded serpentine belt tensioner (Alloy)

Mapping / Dyno by Noble Motorsport.
171 BHP - with dyno print out

Interestingly there was a bit on a news site about a guy who had an R8. The gearbox failed. £32k bill. The car had been modified so no come back on Audi. Worse he didn't know about the mod. Mod done by previous owner. Think he's going to take someone to court

Diesels get the best increase, on my TT I went tuning box and when I px'd it took the box off and sold that on too

Worth considering as very close to a remap Nr

Depends how old and how many miles.
My focus 1.6 tdci has 180k on it would never consider a remap on something like that.

H
Scotte, you and I may have mentioned this previously but I have a Fiesta 1.6 tdci on 96k, so, thank you, I hopefully have a way to go on that engine.

Afaik it always has been illegal as it is:
1.  tampering with the emission control set up
2.  deviating from the homologated specs.

Thanks. Was afraid of something like that. Extensively searched for an after market one.

Diesel fuel filter
Aux belt tensioner
Injectors

Are issues I've had with then engine. No complaints on 182k miles.
Also had the rear suspension bushes done.

None of the first three yet. Recommended cam belt change, petrol filler neck which I damaged by refilling with the hose over the top of the car and nozzle upside down!
I also moved A LOT of soil and stone from our front garden which likely encouraged the rear bushes to require renewal.
All work, except intermediate oil/ filter changes, when I was doing more miles than now and a set of front discs and pads that I did,  done by the Ford Dealer that I bought the car from. Their servicing prices seem competitive to me and I get Ford Breakdown and Recovery FOC, this after 11 years and 96k.

2010 with 97k miles. I'm moving work base that will require more motorway driving so I thought it would be nice to get it tuned and get a bit out of it
