I've had an ECUMaster black kicking around its brand new never used and I have WEMS patch loom. I went to fit the Black ECU this weekend and it connects to the laptop I've downloaded a 2ZZ base map but the car will not start?

Any ideas and step by step guide to identify the issue?

Interestingly it will "run" on brake cleaner so I assume something is wrong with the fueling? Pump cut off?

Call the midlife!

The immobiliser is linked to the standard ECU and cuts the fuel pump so you need the loom to retain that functionality. I don't know what your patch loom links to but it's somewhere to start.
60% of the time it works everytime...

Mark A

I still have the standard ECU to run the clocks etc, I've tested the pump and I can hear it clicking ten times in output testing mode.

Mark A

It's a WEMS patch cable built for MR2 2ZZ ECUmasters black.

jonbill

can you see what pulse width it's using? can you hear the injectors clicking (with a stethoscope)?

Mark A

I can't seem to see that information in the setup tables but I've also tried the RRR 2ZZ Elise basemap and it still won't start, I will test the injectors with a light and get the ECU to pulse them, I'm suspecting the outputs in the ECU and loom are incorrect, although I did attempt to switch them around.

It wouldn't be in the tables, it'll be in the output/logging. it would help confirm if the ecu is trying to inject, or not.
If you can capture a log, I might be able to help.

jonbill

That's not quite what I meant by a log, but useful info. It shows a pulse width of 6.89ms, so it does think its injecting.
It might be too much - are the plugs dry or wet after cranking for a while?
what fuelling strategy is it set for? speed density or MAF? it looks like the MAP might not be connected.

Gaz2405

I run this ECU on my 2ZZ.

The base map straight from RRR may struggle.

Things to check:

•   Throttle, is this down as FBW or cable.
•   Injector sizes and injector wizard. Do they match what you have in?
•   Have you checked and set up the timing using timing light by locking the ignition timing in the cranking tab.
•   Have you connected the MAP sensor

I can send you a map that should get you running but will be based on a 2zz turbo.

Thanks Jon,

Yes when I took the picture the MAP was not connected but its is now. I've not pulled the plugs but its does smell of fuel when cranking and it runs if I spray brake cleaner on the air filter.

It is currently set for speed density.

I'm still waiting for WEMS to send me the outputs list

Mark A

Thanks Gaz,

DBW deselected
Showing 310cc injectors
I've not setup the timings as it appears to run fine when I spray fuel in the inlet pipe
MAP connected to the duty vacuum solenoid hose (which is blocked off at the other end/T'd-off)
I have also tried another basemap

When I tested the outputs some seemed to be incorrect so I neither need to start from scratch or get and check the WEMS outputs

Gaz2405

Might be worth checking outputs and inputs one by one.

You'll be able to hear them during in test mode.

It sounds like there is fuel then, just the wrong amount. can you easily switch back to the oem ecu? would be good test to warm it up on the oem ecu and then switch to the new one. failing that, can you keep it running on easy start or brake cleaner for a while to warm it up a bit? how quickly does it die when you stop the brake cleaner?

jonbill

also: at my bottom of the menu on the left there, you should have a log option - in there you can record and save a log of you cranking it which might be informative.

Mark A

Thanks both, I'll have a go with your suggestions a later today.

Mark A

Thanks for all the help today.

I've managed to get it running this evening but boy is it rich! I've had to come in because its given me a headache!

It did seem to settle down once warm, it stopped hunting and bogging down when blipping the throttle.

So I'll need to play with it, I'm still learning to use the ECUMaster software.

I've got an IAT and Oil pressure CTL light in software not sure why.

jonbill

CTL or CLT? CLT is coolant temp.  I don't think the standard ecu/harness has an oil pressure signal, so you probably haven't got one hooked up, but the config is expecting one - so there's probably somewhere to tell it that there isn't one.
Is it sharing the coolant temp sensor with the oem ecu? there's a bias resistance/resistor in the aftermarket ECU that needs to be disabled for the temp to read correct.

Gaz2405

Yep, you can set the configuration up on the tune display to show various inputs.

I have mine set up showing....

TPS, CLT, MAP, afr, rpm, % correction, IAT, VE and I can't remember the rest without looking.

Sounds like you need to pull some fuel out of the enrichment table to start with.

I use the enrichment Vs CLT.

Then slowly start adjusting your VE, take it for a drive and use the autitune function.

I would use the auto tune function to see what the ECU is suggesting to change to Be tables too and use that as a guide. I find if I use the suggested adjustment it's like to run too lean for my liking.

I'm assuming you've got your VE target tables set and your AFR targets set in VE table 1.

To tune lift I use table set 2 and have the tables switch when lift engages.

Lift should be a configured output (usually and aux). Run it in test mode and see if you hear the solenoid firing.

Sorry a million incoming questions

Does the ECU switch off the MAF and use MAP? Could IAT be intake air temp because the MAF is "deleted"?

I'll have another play tomorrow evening assuming it's not raining and pull some fuel off the enrichment table.

Do you run both Vvts as separate outputs? I've heard them tapping went testing the outputs.

I'll also look into wiring in an Bosch oil temp/pressure sensor.

I need to check the coolant reading tomorrow

Gaz2405

Unless you have a separate IAT sensor, it will use the MAF to get your IAT. ( So not as accurate for heat soak etc)

Cam 1 iirc is inlet and cam 2 is exhaust in the 'vtec' settings.

So tune vvti in cam one and leave cam2. But they should be separate outputs as far as I'm aware, as one deals with the advance/retard under vvti and the other activating lift.

I run an oil pressure gauge to keep and eye on things as well as an oil temp.

In my 'vtec' settings I don't let lift engage until I'm fully upto CLT temp.

Your MAF will be redundant as an air flow meter and used for temp.

The ECU will use the map reading to work out load, rather than air flow.

Another thing to note, if you're using a wideband, the ECU masters have an apparent knack of burning them out if your using the ECU to control it.

I have my wideband set up as a standard gauge and use the 0-5v output from the gauge (white wire on an AEM) as an input for the ECU to read.

There some more info on that in my thread about Emu Black review.

Gaz what do you set the fueling type to speed density and do you use MAP for lambda targets?

Struggling to understand why it's running so rich, I tried taking some fuel out but it runs rough, played with auto tune but it wanted to but way too much fuel in.

I'll have another play tomorrow, small steps and steep learning curve for me.

Gaz2405

Speed density for fuel, map for AFR/lambda unticked.

This is how I have my Tune Display set up too.

I wouldn't use th autotune until it's fully upto temp.
