Frozen throttle cable?

Just tried to drive the V6, got it de-iced and up to temperature, backed out of the drive, into 1st gear and nothing happened, the throttle pedal is locked solid! The car will rev ok under the bonnet.

It was very cold here last night, I think the met office said -8c and it has probably been below freezing for a few days now. It certainly was cold inside the car and there was ice on the metal gearknob from moisture on my gloves!

Any ideas about how to defrost it or where the cable goes?

If you leave the engine running would the general warmth unfreeze the cable?

Cable runs alongside the main water pipes, in that general area so as Paul says, once you get some heat in the system you'd expect it to start to thaw.

I think I had the car running for maybe 20 mins? The air was blowing nice and warm.

Just been outside for a press on the pedal but still solid.

Sounds like I will have to wait for the thaw!

You'll need the thermostat to fully open.. The cabin heater will work long before that happens as it short-circuits the radiator.  It could take a bit more than the twenty minutes when everything is so cold.

Well, that's true for four cylinder cars, your engine installation may have a different set-up, but I'd be surprised if it does.

Looking at the forecast, its only going to get above freezing here for about 2 hours this afternoon. Looks a bit better tomorrow so will try again then.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Reminds me of getting in My Mr2 last Thursday late morning, silly me I had put the hand brake on the previous night,  about to revers out the derive and could I get the hand brake off? No

I ended up driving slow to the other side of town, only after some time did I have partial use of the hand brake, maybe in these cold evenings best to keep the handbrake off over night

And in gear.

In case anyone is wondering, I tried to start it yesterday and straightaway discovered that it is now frozen in the wot position!

I will not try and start it again until the pedal seems to be moving freely!

It's been a habit of mine for years to leave my cars in gear after parking,

in my teens living with my parents, I had a Mini, the hand brake was just about good enough to scrape through the MOT ever year but not much good parking it up on a steep incline,

as luck would have it my parents driveway had an incline, getting up one morning I found my Mini resting front wheels in the gutter and the other half on the road,

my wife and children if they get to drive the car(s) after I've parked always complain to me I've left/forgoten the car in gear

All my 2s are parked in gear and HB off.
