Make Toyota
Model MR2 Roadster
Year 2000
Engine size/type 1798cc 1ZZ-FE
Mileage 84k

currently driving hard on road but considering track day in future

airflow wise I plan to have bigger inlet pipe, air filter, sports manifold & sports catback...don't know if this affects your recommendation?

Cheers!

A good 5w-40 synthetic would be my choice, changed every 8-10,000 miles or once a year which ever comes first.

Have a look at Fuchs, Motul, Silkolene and Mobil.

HI Guy,

I forgot to mention that the engine can be a little thirsty and also a bit noisy, and as I've been putting in 5w30 it has been suggested that I maybe need to try something thicker - is 5w40 enough to make a difference?

Hi Oilman!

Can I have your advice for which oil to use with the following engine:

1ZZ-FE
TTE Turbo - 12-15 PSI
Darton Sleeves
Wiseco Pistons/Rings 8.8:1 compression
Crower Rods
Crower Cams
MWR valves
Toga Oil pump
Probably will have an oil cooler added also
still 7k red line

Its currently being built so I will need to run it in initially. After that it will be driven to and from work every day, driven gently 90% of the time and VERY HARD the other 10%. It will attend the occasional track day also.

To run in a good 10w-40 semi is fine, these are all 100% mineral so ideal for the job.

Once run in a good synthetic, I would look at 5w-40 unless oil temps are excessive.

Plenty to have a look at here  m http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-647-engine-oils.aspx m

Make  Toyota
Model  MR2
Year 2002 (52)
Engine size/type 1.8 vvti

Any mods: Nope

Type of use (road/track)  Road. Driven hard... but very safely and within the law of course ; )

What do you recommend Guy.  Oil change is VERY overdue and I'm not sure what's in it at the moment, (garage supplied on last oil change).  Want to drain, flush and re-fill.

If I was just topping up, would a fully synth (if theres 100% mineral already in it) be OK? i.e. mixing oils?

Thanks, Ben

To get a little more protection for the gearbox, I upgraded to Silkolene Silktran Syn 5. While it seemed to make the box a little quieter, it was a bit too slippery for the synchromesh, so made shifting a bit difficult, particularly when cold.

Last couple of months have been on the Redline MT90 and it has never shifted so sweetly. Box is quieter still too.

Currently using the Redline 75w140 in the Fabia as the diff has been singing for the last 110,000 miles and I fancied it being quieter. Seems to have worked and shifting is good once warmed up a bit too. Considering this gear oil is claimed to have the lubricating durability under pressure of a W250 oil, would it make a good oil for a turbocharged MR2?

I know it is good stuff, but the change quality is not as good as the standard factory fill, the box gets obstructive when cold and never exactly silken when hot. Having tried both, the MT90 is hugely better in this respect in my experience.
