Hi Guy, I'm due the usual yearly service but want to DIY instead of Mr T. I would give them the oil myself but unfortunatley I cannot trust them to use it instead of their oil.

MR2 Roadster
2000 (X reg)  1.8 vvti
54k miles
standard (no mods)

Recently had a leaking timing chain tensioner changed (due to the smallest of leaks). Never top up from one service to the next (approx 5-6K miles a year). Have noticed it a bit more 'tapitty' recently when warm, but no lack of performance and always reliable starting from cold.

Toyota garage have told me they use semi synth 10w 40w. I'm guessing this has always been the same as I have a FTSH. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi,

You can do better then the 10w-40 semi, we would suggest a 5w-40 synthetic for all year round use. These will perform and protect better then a semi synthetic. The better circulation should also keep the engine quieter.

Have a look here at the likes of the Motul 8100 Xcess 5w-40 and the Fuchs Titan Supersyn 5w-40 here  m http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx m

Thanks for the advice. Would you suggest any sort of flush out if I'm swapping to fully synth or would a simple drain and filter change do the trick? I'm worried that an 8 year old engine will have quite a bit of 'ruffage' floating about.

No need for a flush, they can do more harm then good.

Just drain and replace, the synthetic will give it a good cleanout over its next oil change.

Excellent, cheers for the advice.

Sweet this is what I was after as well, as i was thinking of having a complete engine flush and new oil, but if its not needed, ill stick with the 5w-30 Synthetic.

How much oil does a 1zz n/a take? and any deals?

Yep the Pro only comes in 5w-40 or 10w-40, you can use the 5w-40 if you wish. Or go for the Motul 300v 5w-30 as it also smells of bananas.

avoid the 5w30 on the 1zz it's too thin and makes it sound like a bag of nails

Yep, the MT90 is fine.

We recommend 5w-30 or 5w-40 for the engine.

I used 2 Quarts of MT90 which had it filled to the level plug.

Hi All,

I still am failing to make sense of what to do for. Everyone is trying different types.

As i am in a rush to buy oil for the weekend and the chance of getting it posted to N.Ireland for the weekend is slim. Can any one recommend a oil i can buy from halford or the like that is good. I know i will prob pay more but really need on urgently.

Just one sensible answer of i put this in my car, it sounds fine and goes well is all i need.

Thanks
Paukl

Great Thanks I will go with that

What about this one

 m http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... nFcc4-a-uS m

The one you pointd out was nearly 50 quid

will i lose much power or notice any difference between 5w30 and 10w40?

I have used this oil in my 2 since Oct08 to no obvious detriment.  Several other owners use 10w40

Super S is a semi synthetic not a full synthetic like the Mobil 1. Some engines run ok on the 30 grade, others don't and run better on the 40. I wouldn't put semi synthetic in my engine but that's just personal preference. The way I see it, oil is a major component of an engine and something that has to be done right.

I agree, what about the fact the manual states the use of semi and not fully?

There are almost as many opinions as oils!

A frequent claim on many performance forums is that Mobil 1 0w30 is too "thin" resulting in high oil consumption. Mobil do not feature a synthetic 10w40 on their website.
