I am looking at getting 4 new tyres for my mr2, i curretly have 185/55/r15 and 215/45/r16 but i was wondering if its ok to run with 195/50/r15 and 225/40/r16, will these fit on the rims safely, also is it a good combination? if not what is the best combination, any advice would be much appriciated, i'm lost. Cheers

would it not be better to go for 205's on the front with 225's and keep the difference in the stagger the same?

I'm with you on the confusing thing richie. Currently looking at front/rear options for a pre-facelift with 16 rears, with the old 15 rears going onto the front.

Favourite so far is GSD-3 boots:
225/45 R16 rear
195/45 R15 front

GSD-3 Fronts are also available in 195/50 but I've no idea what the pros/cons are! Presumably if I want to effect a tighter sidewall I should go with the 45s on the 6.5" rims.

195/50 is better 195/45 is too short a sidewall

personally Ithink 225/45 on the rear is too tall as well. not generally as my neovas are finein those sizes, more because F1 sidewalls oare too squidgy for that profile without running substantially over pressure.

The confusion continues. F1s that D-Tweeks have told me are available are being flatly denied by Goodyear themselves  s:shock:  s:shock:

Following your advice Mark, I can get matching GSD-3s in 215/40 (but not 225   s:cry:  s:cry:  ) and 195/50s for the front.l No sign that either of these are going to be discontinued for a while - hoorah.

Couldn't wish for a better recommendation Mark. Thaks for all your help with this, both in public and in private  s8) 8) s8)

GSD3s are on order with Blackcirles (Mytyres gave me monster runaround with the sizes  s:cry:  s:cry:  ).

Fronts: £35.40 each inc VAT
Rears: £77.84 each inc VAT

With delivery - £235.88 for all four

Just a heads-up for anyone still on GSD2s and looking for rear 16" options, 215/40s are available for the foreseeable, but Goodyear tell me there's only 11 225/45s left in the country and they've now gone offline.

Also, all the tech advice I've received has been that mixing pairs of 2s and 3s front & rear isn't an issue - they're pretty compatible (a question raised in another thread but I can't be bothered to post in it  s:wink:  s:wink:  ) Still at your own risk though I suppose.
