Well yesterday wasn't my best day in the world, whilst attempting to track down and cure a number of rattles, I was out on a test run, fortunately local and no A roads.

When

s:scared: :scared: s:scared:   this huge mettalic screach comes from teh rear end and the gearbox attempts to do it's best impression of a blender with a bag of nails emptied into it  s:-( :-( s:-(

So having limped very slowly back home in 1st gear, the car is in rather a sorry state.

having had to dash off for a wedding (oh what timing) I managed to get time today to diagnose further.

1. Clutch down - engine revs fine and sounds no different to normal

2. Clutch in, but in neutral as above

3. 1st and reverse gears whilst slipping the clutch just at teh biting point and she moves ok.

Whenever given full clutch engagement or using higher gears it sounds like something is dragging/catching metal on metal. Intermittently it either won't go into or out of gear and tries to stall when you attempt to move off.

I've checked the linkages and all seem ok, and with teh engine off all gears can be selected.

so the possibilities eem to be

1. Flywheel (Unlikely I think)
2. Clucth
3. Throw out bearing
4. Selector fork
5. Gearbox internals

Guess who's spending next weekend dropping the box  s:-( :-( s:-(

all suggestions welcome, I'm off to swear at the wall   s:twisted:  s:twisted:

Bloody hell Mark, you've definitely had better days methinks  s:( :( s:(

What I know about gearboxes could be written on the end of a grain of rice, but if you want a hand or anything you know where I am.

That rather sounds internal to me - maybe input shaft bearing, but probably internal.

I was talking to Stu about this earlier, and then reading through the BGB I don't think this will be too difficult a job..

The biggest thing is the need to drop the engine off three of it's four mounts and lower it a little - the BGB calls for a special engine stay, but I reckon some strong rope plus that RSJ in your garage ceiling could do it.. The only thing is, I can't remember if the RSJ is totally exposed to get a rope around it?

If not then it's either a case of supporting the engine from below with a plank & jack, or someone with a strong back stands on your suspension turrets with a rope over their shoulders..

As I said to Stu, I can make next weekend (not flying to Munich till Monday morning now), so if you want a hand let me know.

I've got a couple of webbing straps with ratchet thingys, the sort lorry drivers use to tie down loads, may help to raise/lower engine with some control. one is humongous thick the others are rather light. cant beat block and tackle though (pulleys to you engineers). I'm thinking a threefold purchase would handle the weight and give small enough movement on the hauling part.

If the RSJ is no good I can rig a simple derrick, either as a set of sheers (two poles) or a gin (three poles)... all I'd need are poles and rope....and in the case of sheers something to anchor to. Poles may be tricky to source, but it's not as far fetched as it sounds.

Sorry to hear about the box mate. Not an expert on transmissions, but if you can get it to move, there may be a chance the whole thing isn't shot and its something less than the whole box gone.

thanks guys

well having spent teh evening engrossed in the BGB it seems that dropping teh box is almost criminally easy.

however any work on it requires a million and one SSTs  s:-( :-( s:-(

lerts hope it's something obvious

If not then perhaps it's time for a 6pd upgrade?  s;) ;) s;)

Anyway, step 1 is seeing if lots of metal shavings come out with the box oil, that'd be bad..

Step 2, remove the box..

Step 3, remove the end cap and see if anything falls out..

Most of the SSTs are either drifts for tapping bearings & rings back in, or gear pullers for removing gears from shafts - the good thing is neither are Toyota specific, although it'd be a costly exercise to buy all the pullers if you're only going to break open one box.

Oh, set of verniers and circlip pliers will be essential too.

This made me chuckle:

Sounds like this could be painful, Mark  s;) ;) s;)

True - the diff ring gear is also the final drive, isn't it.. I don't suppose the 5spd diff would fit the 6spd casing?  Granted you might end up with a strange set of gear ratios..

[edit] Ah, reading up (found a post by wts) it would seem that isn't possible.. d'oh.

Hi Mark

Hoping that it is a cheapish fix for you. I had similar problems on a box years ago and it was the output shaft end bearing. Early signs were slightly dodgy shifting and a little gear whine. This followed months later by bearing collapse. Replaced the bearing and the whole thing worked fine for the rest of the cars life.

Cant remember if yours is F/I or N/A. How many miles? Did you go to MT90 to fix sticky shifting? If so, could have been early signs of trouble on way.

Hmm - actually, found this over at Spyderchat:
 m http://www.spyderchat.com/phpBB2/viewto ... %2A+6sp%2A m

Which implies that the TRD Helical 5spd LSD will fit the 6spd casing - in which case, you might well be able to get any old 6spd and drop your LSD in..

Sounds very much like what happened when my clutch disc exploded. I hope it's just as simple for you.

Have you had any wheel hop while you've had the clutch? I understand that's one of the main reasons for killing the clutch.  s:? :? s:?
