Yeah I'm changing them tomorrow of a Ngk new set. When I drove the car to work this morning didn't seem to misfire as bad as it did yesterday

Could it be drying out even more and causing it to improve?

Hopefully will just correct it fully after plugs are changed

On a related note, a friend of mine with a Tuscan had a misfire problem this too turned out to be water in the coilpack well. New sparkplug and all was well again, so hopefully will be the same for you too.

Typical with water in the electrics. It shows that the drying procedure used was not 100% effective. Suggest you give it another go before you put the new plugs in. With the weather as it is this week, get plenty of sun in the engine compartment. Certainly can only be beneficial   s8) 8) s8)

One hand suggestion is to take the coilpacks out and leave them on top of the boiler overnight.

If the coils get wet will this automatically ruin them or will drying them out help the matter? Worth a try i suppose.  s:? :? s:?

What've you got to lose?

If they work ok afterwards, take them out and give them a liberal spray of some ignition type sealant stuff.

Strange how water has managed to get into the plug chambers, between the coil packs and the engine cover, it all seems pretty well sealed to me. Anyone got any ideas how the waters got in there in the first place? Might be useful so people know how to prevent it. Have you taken the tray off from the underside of the engine lid?

Ah, he's posted up a WTB for an engine cover because his is cracked - that may be the reason! If someone has steam cleaned or jetwashed the engine bay then a cracked cover would explain it.

Should be fine, water only damages electrics when it shorts and fries the components. Shouldn't be anything to short though at the bottom end with just the coil.

Yeah that'd do it! Even just a mix of rain water and quick driving could blow the water in through a crack, common problem on the VX220 i think.

Yeah i have only just purchased the car and looks like the engine has been steam cleaned which would cause this whole scenerio.

Im getting new engine cover as it is cracked and this could of caused water problem. I will fit new spark plugs and while im doing that will dry out chamber and coils even more.

finger crossed

One question - Did you buy this from a dealer?

If so, why aren't you getting them to sort it out?

Yeah but from dealer about 100 miles away. If costs go over £10 then will forward bills on to them.

At the moment i have only spent £9 on some ngk spark plugs.

I see - understood.

Get a set of NGKs in anyway, they're much better than any of the others.

Update...........

I drove the car this evening and now seems to be bad again. Seems to misfire and not like it when driving under 2000rpm. Once you get past 2000rpm seems better. CEL warning light is back on.

Sounds bit like a subaru at low revs. Deep exhaust sound - Rough sound.

Any ideas? Can anyone recommend a toyota specialist near tunbridge wells in kent. I'm going to phone dealer I bought it from tomorrow.

Have you replaced the plugs - if not do it ASAP, it takes them out of the picture.

From what you are saying, I came across the same thing last year and it turned out to be a faulty injector - read this  m http://www.mr2roc.org/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... ht=misfire m

The biggest problem for you is the code reader.

Right I've received new spark plugs and managed to get two new coils on the cheap.

Going to fit them tonight. After reading several posts on forums it seems to be the right thing to do.

Fingers crossed.

I recon that will sort it, but i wouldn't take it out in the rain until you've replaced the engine cover or you risk killing the new ones too.

So did this work out OK? As for keeping moisture out of plug wells and various other electrical stuff MS4 silicone compound does the best job I ever saw.

Just checked for availability, it is now called Dow Corning DC4. Same stuff, best there is.

I have replace both coil packs which had water in the chambers and replaced all four spark plugs.

Reset the ecu and then drove the car for about 30 minutes.

Power is back to normal - feels quick again   s:D :D s:D  and no warning lights or misfiring.

Touch wood this has cured the problem and it doesn't happen again. Also fitted a new engine cover so no water gets in there again.

Fingers crossed

Good stuff! Hope its stays fixed. Post up here if any problems come back and have a quick check after the next lot of rain to make sure it was the old engine cover that was letting the water in rather than anything else.

For double safety ensure the gasket is in place on the coil pack and spray each with an ignition sealer.

Update ........

After finding water originally in the chambers I didn't drive the car and let it all dry for 5 days. After leaving it for 5 days I drove it monday and it felt completley fine. Power back etc - I replaced the two coils and all spark plugs just incase water had got to them.

Drove the car since monday evening and everything was fine, power was back to normal and no hesitation etc.

Driving the car this evening it started to misfire at low revs again. When at idle speed - feels like it wants to stall. Experiencing loss of power.

I took off my new engine cover, checked coils packs and spark plugs - this time no water in the chamber what so ever so not that problem this time.

I unplugged each injector connection individually and when I disconnected cylinder 1,3,4 injector it ran worse. When i disconnected number two it didn't make any difference. Which leads me to think its injector two at fault.

I have tried injector cleaner fuel treatment - no difference.
Please can some one give me some further advice?

Thank you
