Rear window shattered!

Went to put the soft top down this morning - whole thing was a little stiff due to car being in the shade of the morning sun, and as I gave the glass a bit of a push, the whole thing shattered to smithereens. I was flabberghasted and raging, but it looks like my insurance will cover it for 60 quid. Is this at all common? It's not like I was ramming it down with the strength of Hercules or something, the manual says to gently push on the glass so that's what I did!

You're not the first person it's happened to.

Good luck with the insurance when they find out it's a few thousand pounds for a whole new roof.

You live and learn - first one for quite some time.

However, glass is bonded to hood - so a £2K + bill seems to be the norm for a new hood. MrT don't sell glass seperately. If they say they do, thats for the hard-top.

Let us know if you find an alternative to a replacement hood.

autoglass have said they'll do it for 700 quid...so it's impossible to do it without replacing the roof?

  s:crazyeyes:  s:crazyeyes:

what causes this to happen? it's a sheet of solid glass, and how else are you supposed to push it down without...pushing it?

I've seen someone on Fleebay selling the rear glass for a softtop recently, don't know how hard it would be to bond in a new glass though.

Something on the shelf?
Make sure that when you press it down you have got the front of it under the "lip" properly. If it was stuck on there it could easily break.

Can't be too hard. And I bet you could get a new glass from a glass shop for some 100 euros, without the heating wires though. The unscratchable lexan might also be a good choice with some weight loss while you're at it.  s8) 8) s8)
Sure you can live without 500hp, but it\'s languishing.

hopefully if the worst comes to the worst my insurance will treat it as a normal claim and i'll only lose my no claims bonus (and get a new soft top too  s:) :) s:) ). That said, I doubt Autoglass would book me in if they had never done one. The guy actually phoned me up to say that they'd need the whole day to get it replaced, and it wouldn't be drivable for a few hours afterwards.

Well if they fix it i'm sure the rest of us would be interested to find out what you think of the repair.

Might just be worthwhile checking with Autoglass they completely understand what they are doing before you spend time or money. They maybe thinking of a MkI or II, or as I said before even the hardtop.

We are all certainly waiting with bated breath though to hear if they can do it.

I really think that is very sound advice to check first.
I'm sure Autoglass have some very capable people, but in my experience they can make incorrect assumptions, so a bit of time taken to ask may save a lot of bother. My windscreen took them 6 attempts before they brought along the correct one.

well i just phoned autoglass to politely confirm that they have performed this procedure and was told rather bluntly that their staff have done many of these, and not to listen to people on the internet who weren't 'technicans' or 'industry professionals'.

2 mins later I got a call back just to confirm that I had the 'hard top model' errr no, "oh well, you'll have to go to the dealer instead"

It's pity they couldn't do it - but just as we expected. Well just have to call ourselves "industry technical professionals" from now on.   s:wink:  s:wink:

Best of luck with the dealer.

Sorry to hear of you problems.  I wonder whether someone like this might be able to offer advice.

I find it incredible that a broken window renders the whole top useless - so wasteful.

Good luck.

600 quid is well into hard top territory though...thinking I might just try and get a hard top and then sort out a trip to the Netherlands for a Robbins soft top next spring.

Wait till the insurers come back, you are insured for a reason you know!!
Anyways my mate works for Autoglass and he charged £7000 for a front screen for a Diablo and the customer only paid the £50 excess

here's one for the floor then - has anyone ever managed to fabricate a decent home made replacement? If the vinyl roof's buggered no matter what, I'm not too concerned about leaving marks on it. Would it not be easy enough to get a piece of perspex measured up and fixed on with some sealant? it works for MX5 drivers   s:lol:  s:lol:

Why not ask a glazier to cut the glass and a soft top roof specialist to fit it. You would then need to source an aftermarket demister.
