Quote from: "loadswine"I really think that is very sound advice to check first.
I'm sure Autoglass have some very capable people, but in my experience they can make incorrect assumptions, so a bit of time taken to ask may save a lot of bother. My windscreen took them 6 attempts before they brought along the correct one.

been down this road before and after a bit of screwing around found that they think the post facelift is from late 04 onwards rather than late 02 onwards, but they wont change their manuals to reflect this

Yep, my problem seemed to stem from an out of date database that they were using and a whole heap of "we know what we're doing and you know nothing" attitude!

Quote from: "nelix"Why not ask a glazier to cut the glass and a soft top roof specialist to fit it. You would then need to source an aftermarket demister.

Has this been done by anyone else? Not sure if there is such a thing as a soft top roof specialist in the north east   s:( :( s:(

Go and find the nearest Aston dealer and ask them who they use. The people who do Aston stuff round here did my soft top replacements, and they were excellent.

I know that you have spoken to the less than useless Autoglass, but have you spoken again to your insurance company again?

I don't think you really need a specialist to install it. It's just glued on. Mine started to work itself loose some years ago and had to reglue it. Not a big deal, really and I'm sure you could do it yourself.
Sure you can live without 500hp, but it\'s languishing.

Intersting thread.....but a bit scary  s:scared: :scared: s:scared:

I'm going to be super gentle with my rear screen from now on and not put the top down from within the car  s:roll:  s:roll:

I bet insurance underwriters would call for a significant hike in insurance prices if they knew the extent of the problem of a smashed/damaged screen costing the price of a full soft top  s:scared: :scared: s:scared:

if you can get a glass then it can be installed, just have a good hunt about and i would consider talking to glass manufactuerers, its only bonded in after all

Have to agree with Liz, you are insured, your glass is covered, get them to do the leg work!

I wonder if breakers etc would consider cutting a piece of glass out of a roof?? Obviously reduces their resale options on the whole kit, unless roof is damaged. Or is the glass something of a standard size that could be picked up elsewhere?

No.

But it really is as easy as walking to a nearest glass shop and telling them what you need. They'll cut it just like you want it. You can even get a heart shaped rear window, if you wish. Last time I needed one (not for my '2) it ended up being about 20 euros, including the cutting and rounding of the edges. I also bought a generic heater element from local car parts store, which was 10 euros. Takes a little time and running around, but if you want a cheap fix, I can't imagine it getting much cheaper than this.

And by glass shop I mean those who sell windows and stuff, not drinking glasses etc.  s:lol:  s:lol:

Or all three...

Presumably the glass would need to be of a suitable spec - you don't want anything that in event of a crash would send shards of glass spearing towards you...

I like the idea mentioned further up of using a plastic alternative.  You couldn't heat it of course, but it would prevent a repetition of the shattering..

Of course. The good thing about glass shops is that you don't have to know anything about that stuff. Just say where you need it and they'll know what you need.  s8) 8) s8)

I think you could heat a plastic/lexan too.

The heater is no big deal though. I haven't had mine connected for years.  s:? :? s:?

have made claim, local glass company have said they'll get back to me with a definite answer tomorrow but are pretty sure they can put in a new rear window (yes, even after repeatedly confirming that they were aware that my roadster just happened to be one of the ones without a hard roof   s:lol:  s:lol:  )

If it was anything like my old Mini, that would be because your heater matrix was p!ssing coolant into the footwells! There was not enough room inside to steam the windows up any other way.

Neither, just that participants were a bit too choosy for in car action. It can be done in a '2 though  s8) 8) s8)
