Oi oi,

Buckled one of my wheels a few months back by slipping sideways in to a curb (patchy road surface, pissing rain, and over-estimated my speed  s:( :( s:( ) - drove the car round since then and it felt fine. Had two wheels replaced just before Christmas and haven't driven the Roadster much. The mk2 broke down so I'm back in the Roadster at the moment, and the back end seems very floaty - would this be an effect of a buckled wheel? And am I going to have to fork out for a new one?  s:( :( s:(

Cheers!

I'd check your tyre pressure first.

Tyre pressures are fine (first thing I checked) and I'm not hearing any knocks from the suspension. I'll check the pressures again tomorrow though just to be sure.

My Missus buckled a wheel REALLY seriously and they managed to straighten it for like £25 BARGAIN!

Could it have damaged the wheel bearing?

So it feels a bit odd after the wheels where replaced. What wheel / tyre combination do you have at each corner now? Are they all around the same miles on the tyres, or are there two new and two old ones?

Shuffled into troubleshooting - hope you get it sorted matey.

I'd also be looking at tyres as the first port of call, particularly as this started when you changed the wheels rather than when you buckled the old one (assuming you replaced like-for-like on wheel sizes   s:wink:  s:wink:  ).

Hmm, do you have to go to a specialist to straighten out a buckled wheel? Sounds a hell of a lot cheaper than buying (and trying to find) a single OZ Racing wheel......!

Basically I had a puncture in the offside rear. So I had both rears replaced at the same time - Toyo T1-Rs (TR-1s?). The front are about 6 months old but still have plenty of grip on them and besides, it's the rear that feels floaty, not the front :S

The rears are 205's, the fronts are 185's.

Cheers!

Toyos do take a while to de-squiggle and I've had similar rear floatiness when replacing rear F1s but keeping older fronts. It settled after a while but was never as good as an all-round new (or equally old!) set of boots.

Granted a full set of tyres would've been better, but I'd hardly budgeted for having to replace TWO tyres just before Christmas due to a puncture, let alone 4!

I think they've done about 500 miles on them now... If not more!

What pressures are you running? Try raising the rears or lowering the fronts to reduce floatiness at the back, only needs to be 1 or 2 psi to make a difference.

I think I'm about 28 / 32 at the moment, something in that region. What would you recommend for 16" Toyo T1-Rs?

well if they were 15" they should be

185/55/15 front
205/50/15 rear

and if 16" rears

185/55/15 front
215/45/16 rear

exactly what width AND profile do you have front and rear?

with those sizes I'd start from stock pressures

drop teh fronts by 2 psi to help understeer, then add 3 psi all round due to teh sloppier sidewalls

then adjust as neccessary from there depedning on what you don;t like
