What tyres?

Hi all,

As some of you may know, I'm getting V6'd up at the moment. My tyres need replacing at the front, so figured this may be a good time to get rid of the Toyo T1-Rs on at the moment. Basically they're good tyres, but I want a stiffer side wall. However the car will be my daily drive, so I don't want tyres which are ONLY grippy in the dry. Looking through the tyre review thread, many people seem to have T1-Rs, or tyres that are practically slicks....

The wheels I have on are Oz Michelangelo 8's, which are 16x7. What's the widest tyre I can put on this size wheel? I have 185's on the front and 205's on the rear at present I believe. I'm guesing I need 50 profile due to the fact I'm rolling 16s  s:) :) s:)

So what do people think?

205/45 front, and i got 225.40 on the rear of mine.

Try and get yourself some Good year eagle f1's. they were my choice of tyre before the toyos.

this is a good site, to find out what the biggest tyre a rim can take.

Thanks for the info  s:) :) s:)

Well that site says that 225/50 16 is 6*16 - 7.5*16    does that mean it'll fit on any widths between 6" - 7.5", or does it need to be at least 7.5" wide? I'm thinking some wider tyres may be a good idea seeing as I'll have about 220bhp to play with.

It will be pretty rapid Will. Mine probably has less than that, is heavier as well, and that is no slouch.
The 1MZ looks totally factory in the Roadster bay by the way.
If you can stretch to it, and you can get them, what about the Toyo R1R? Sounds like a good compromise but not found where to get any here yet. You could be the first.  s:wink:  s:wink:

I think overall diameter on a 225/50 will be too big (631mm)
According to the following two sites, 225's should be ok on 16" rims between 6/6.5 inch to 8.5 inch wide.

I've got new wheels with Falken 452's on in the conservatory, waiting to go onto the car but at the moment I can't fit them or drive due to an accident at work   s:cry:  s:cry:   so I can't say what the tyres are like. They've received the following reviews, which seem ok but I don't think they're available in the sizes you want!

go for a 40 profile mate, i hate 215/45 on the rear of mine before on an 8 and it was pretty stretched. Go 225/40 or 45 if you really want  a thicker side wall.

So just to clarify, will 225/40 fit on my wheels? And should I get 40 profile on the fronts too so the profile is the same all round? Will it not do anything nasty to the handling?  s:) :) s:)  I always assumed smaller profile = less flex = better handling?

I'm a new member who has recently acquired a 2001 Jap Mk3 in pretty much factory spec.  I find the following site excellent for tyre info.

The 40 refers to the profile as a percentage of the aspect or width.

eg  225/40 = 40% of 225mm = 90mm, so the sidewall height or profile is 90mm.

Therefore, you'll need to put different profile front to back, as per OEM, to maintain the stagger and the overall diameter of the wheels.

eg  205/45/16 front and 225/40/16 rear.

A lower profile should provide better handling (and less comfortable ride), but obviously sidewall rigidity varies between manufacturer. Also, some brands do certain sizes with reinforced sidewalls.

I'm at home now, so can form a proper reply!

Heh, I can't wait. Proper excited, and I like a month to go! ;(

I'd prefer to A) Not be the guinea pig, and B) Not have to search high and low to find them! Also, I'm unfortunately not made of money ;D

Quote from: "Kool PT"first dibs on this car when you come to sell

I don't think this is likely to happen unfortunately! Only way I'll get rid of the car is if I stack it or it blows up I'm afraid!

So is it safe to say 205/45/16 front and 225/40/16 rear is the way to go? And the rears will fit my 7" wheels without sacrificing handling?

"1010Tires" calculator shows mininmum rim width for a 225 tyre is 7.5 inch, whereas "Wheelmaster" calculator says it's 6.5 inch.

Link below shows what people are running on S.C.

http://www.spyderchat.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15324&highlight=tire+sizes

Also, check out

and

Plenty of people on here running 225's on a 7 inch rim, with no real problems.

I'm sure one of the more active posters on here can give a definitive answer though.  s:wink:  s:wink:
