Alloys again - out of warranty...aftermarket?

I lent my MR2 to my bro in law who very kindly returned it with some shiny wheel nuts on. Unfortunately 2 of them have welded themseves onto the valve  s:roll:  s:roll:  Hence I took my '2 to the ATS garage at the end of the road to see if they could get them off. The rather helpful ATS guy said that the heat form the brakes had caused them to weld on and the wheels themselves have corroded through and need replacing  s:shock:  s:shock: . I'm a little surprised they need replacing rather than refurbing. Does this sound plausible?

Our friendly ATS mechaninc suggested aftermarket wheels (like the 18's he had on his escort cab  s:wink:  s:wink: ) but I'm quite keen to keep with original looking wheels. Does anyone know who makes the MR2 wheels or a good source of them?

I'm not completely against aftermarket wheels so if any one has a good recommendation then let me know. I'm certainly keen to keep the same sizing.

I've had rusty alloys for quite some time (since I had the car) but Toyota in Henley refused to change them under warranty because of some kerbing. Does anyone know if they are covered under the 5year anti-corrosion waranty?

many thanks (and sorry for yet another alloys thread!)

i have a set of pre-03 alloys for sale if you are interested.£220 for a set of 4 with locking wheel nuts.they need new tyres on the front but have brand new pirellis on the back.
not bad considering they are £400 each from toyota and thats without tryes.

I would take them to a decent refurbisher first rather than scrap them without a 2nd opinion.

If they are scrap, then I would go for something other than the stock ones just because they seem not to last. Have a look at http://www.tirerack.com which maybe US based but has a handy feature for seeing what their range of wheels look like on our car.

My personal choice would SSR  Type-Cs (also know as Competitions in the US) http://www.speedstar.co.jp/collection/ssr_type_c/index.html or Volk Racing TE37s http://www.rayswheels.co.jp/emenu/wheel.html. Alternatively as the Club has a great future GB with TTE consider one of their wheels http://www.tte.de/

Cheers for the advice. Having looked at it again I'm reasonably confident the wheels aren't dead so it's a matter of whether to have the refurbed (4x£60=£240) or go for a second hand set like Jonboys (which are very tempting by the way!)

...although I like the idea of some BBS wheels...

Any way you can get the wheels to Telford? My local refurbisher is a lot cheaper at £25 a wheel, and that is to have it stripped, repaired and painted, with excellent results.

At £25 per wheel I reckon I could get them to Telford yes! My family are around Wolverhampton so I'm sure i could sort something out (MR2 on axle stands anyone?!). Have you got any contact details for them?

cheers,

dave.

I have, they are KN Wheels, call them on 01952-616066 and ask for Ian, tell him Sean with the black MR2 sent you  s:wink:  s:wink:

If you need any help with the logistics then let me know, I only live a couple of miles from them, and my standard wheels will be going in to be done in the next couple of weeks.
