I tend to sit at about 3000rpm which is around 80 in 6th gear, got about 300miles from the first couple of tanks but its getting better as the car gets ran in (1200 miles now).
If you take the revs to 4K your nearly at 100mph (Allegedly)   s:) :) s:)

Ok folks.....here are some fuel checks I have done over the 1st year of onwnership. Very easy to do. I do it every now & then just to see if there is a drastic change that could highlight a possible problem.

1) Fill tank to max so you can see level.
2) Reset mileage counter.
3) Drive.
4) When you refuel note milage.
5) Fill tank to max so you can see level & note litres put in.
6) Convert figures.

Milage....Fuel (ltrs)...Fuel (gal)......MPG

261.90......39.33........8.65..........30.27
258.20......38.07........8.38..........30.83
263.60......40.71........8.96..........29.43
198.60......30.71........6.76..........29.40
265.40......38.40........8.45..........31.42
284.60......40.30........8.87..........32.10
289.20......39.20........8.62..........33.53
303.00......38.77........8.53..........35.52
286.40......39.21........8.63..........33.20
190.00......28.01........6.16..........30.83
267.00......40.06........8.81..........30.30
261.00......37.78........8.31..........31.40

I obviously pass a lot of MX5's       s:twisted:  s:twisted:

I have a 12 month old '02 with 16k on the clock and it's now clocking average 340 miles in between fills.  My best was 375.... am trying to clock 400.... but that does mean I'll have to drive like a granddad.

Biggest killer on fuel is up Wrotham Hill on M20!  You needle can drop 1/8 of a tank just going up it at 70mph!

Cheapest petrol, Sainsburys (I know... cheap and nasty supermarket stuff) on the Greenwich Peninsular, London.  71.5p/litre

I have always kept my fuel figures for 2 reasons - the office want to see it for the fuel card usage, and it can give a good indication of impending problems - especially when plotted as the chart below :-

And no I DON'T drive like an MX5 owner as can be seen from above   s:twisted:  s:twisted:    s:D :D s:D

I found that when I had an air leak into the fuel tank, the gauge was all over the place. For those thinking that their gauge is acting all funny, when you next fill up, check that the tank is under vacuum - ie when you open the filler cap, there should be an in-rush of air.
