Hi,

Just read the  2"new" engines in 6 months horror story  from a recently new member.

Surely this begs the question that I'm sure I brought up a few years ago...how can we indentify pre and post facelift engines?
Engine Numbers? British Leyland changed the timing on the Metro so many times you had to check the Engine number to confirm the exact timing for the car...

Surely there must be some way, ideally as easy as possible, to tell if the engine is 1999-02, 03to whenever or year of manufacture, that is, apart from the Reg.
I realise it's not the total answer God forbid you have to buy a second hand engine....but it's someway along the line, any information is better than none!

I can't believe Mr T would stuggle to indentify an overbore threatened engine.

While we don't have this information, any second hand engine dealer/ scrapper has members by the shorts. "Just pulled it out an 06 plate pal, lovery car, like new it was, only done 2 thousand miles, owned by a Vicar's wife!" Aye and the rest!!

With the amount of technical brains in this outfit , surely someone can  up with a definitive answer...?

I''ll shut up now!!

Maybe we could tie engine numbers to production numbers to get a better idea,i.e if we knew the engine number of a late 02/52 and an early 03/53 and 06/56 or TF300 hopefully we could work out the range of engine numbers if this makes sense?

There was definately a post on Spyderchat about this a few years ago, I remember because my 2001 was on the cusp so it could have gone either way. As it happened, the numbers said old pistons and rings etc.

You could try a search on there or brave a new post.

Without giving the exact number could you list it to the nearest 100?

My MR2 was first registered 14/07/2000 with a chassis/engine no to the nearest 100: JTDFR3207000162**,engine number 1ZZ 05385**.

HI,

Good stuff so far....to be frank, I would have thought it in everyone's interest to have some form of reference.

Maybe the Mods..if they felt it would assist, could set up a folder where motivated members could confirm age, reg date and engine number, This would eventually, with enough response, give us a feel for the issue.yes/no?

if you phrase it correctly, i.e don;t accuse them of killing oue cars with dodgy engines/precats

they may be more helpful than you think

I would say see how this thread goes as this info could be useless if there is no sequential pattern to the numbers or there is no real response with members not giving the info. Why not post your details too and help get the ball rolling.

Yeh, the thought crossed my mind as I'm sure the Haynes on the old Metro ran engine numbers and I assume that came from BL.

Anyway.

Reg Date:                           Variant:                             Engine No.

As stated previously  V5C Form.....has the info.....I'll try and make the time next week to ingratiate myself with Mr T GB, meantime if anyone would like to add details would be helpful....IMHO we should have had some form of reference years ago!

Mike,

Me thinks that would be most helpful, hopefully there are enough replies for a pattern to develop and we can construct a reference. Meantime, I'll have a crack at Mr T next week.

For this to be of any use, I need as much information as possible and I hope that all members can get involved, it may or may not show a pattern but if it does then i feel that this is something that we all want to know.

How are you going to tie the engine numbers up with engine production dates? Registration date of the car is useless to you as is 'year' of manufacture, you need the month & year of actual manufacture in the factory.

Anyway, this might help. For all these parts I checked all production years, the dates listed are just the 'important' dates with reference to the particular year I copied & pasted from.

13011 RING SET, PISTON
13011‑22090 1ZZFE..ZZW30, STD (12/1999 - 10/2001) 1 € 142.92
13011‑22150 1ZZFE..ZZW30, STD (11/2001 - 07/2002) 1 € 142.92

The later part - 13011-22150 is then listed for all years through to termination of production. So the piston rings changed from 11/2001.

13101 PISTON SUB-ASSY, W/PIN
13101‑22030 1ZZFE..ZZW30, STD (12/1999 - 11/2001) 4 € 74.82
13101‑22031 1ZZFE..ZZW30, STD (12/2001 - 07/2002) 4 € 74.82
13101 PISTON SUB-ASSY, W/PIN
13101‑22031 1ZZFE..ZZW30, STD (08/2002 - 04/2005) 4 € 74.82
13101‑22032 1ZZFE..ZZW30, STD (05/2005 - 08/2005) 4 € 77.71

The piston changed twice - 13101-22030 is listed for all cars to 11/2001. 13101-22031 is used from 12/2001 through to 04/2005 and finally 13101-22032 was used through the end of production.

13201 ROD SUB-ASSY, CONNECTING
13201‑29038 1ZZFE..ZZW30 (08/2002 - 06/2004) 4 € 121.18
13201‑29176 1ZZFE..ZZW30 (07/2004 - 12/2004) 4 € 123.38

Earlier part runs from beginning of production to 06/2004. Later part runs till 2005 when:

13201 ROD SUB-ASSY, CONNECTING
13201‑09201 1ZZFE..ZZW30, (L) 4 € 149.79
13201‑29038 1ZZFE..ZZW30 4 € 121.18
13201‑29176 1ZZFE..ZZW30, (J) 4 € 123.38

Apparently engines were produced with three possible parts in use..

Also:

17141 MANIFOLD, EXHAUST
17104‑22060 1ZZFE..ZZW30 1 € 1,224.88
17104‑22061 1ZZFE..ZZW30, *115=TOYOTA/00-/Y 1 € 1,224.88

Prior to 2002 only 17104-22060 is listed, in 2002 both are listed and post 2002 only the latter (newer) part is listed.

So .. out of that myriad of changes, which one do you want to gamble was the one that fixed the issue? Is it the rings & pistons which changed in December 2001, or was it the manifold that changed some time in 2002 with no referenced production date?

aaronjb, I assume you used the ToyoDIY site for this info. I don't know how reliable the information is, but I would recommend it as a good starting point if anyone is  looking for info on part numbers, dates, etc.

On a slightly different topic, for those who are looking for interchangability this site now has a "where used" function, so for example the short engine in my car is part number 11400-22060 which is used in

08/1999-06/2005 TOYOTA CELICA ZZT23
05/2000-10/2005 TOYOTA RAV4

No menion of the Avensis, which (for a 2002 model) is part number 11400-0D060, unique to the Avensis

This throws up all kinds of interesting (for some people) data, e.g. one camshaft also fits the Corolla,  Avensis, Celica,& RAV4, whilst the other applies to the last two only. The ABS speed sensor is surprisingly unique to the MR2, whilst the EFi relay (same as the cooling fan) is used all over the place, as you'd expect.

The magic number is 2003,the idea of this is to check if the used engine from an unknown source is from a 2003 onwards as claimed by the seller some of which have cottoned on that everyone wants a 2003 onwards.Surely if we can achieve this then it can only be a good thing and stop people being ripped off buying high mileage prefacelift engines advertised as good low mileage facelift ones, the few participants engine numbers so far seem to indicate a low to high sequence so if we could get some more participants to look at their log book and take part we may be able to nail this.

There is info from Toyota stating the date that the change happened was 21July 2005, when the piston and rings were changed. Production stopped in October 2005. This change was to reduce the risk of higher oil consumption. I have been given this info by two people with connections to Toyota.

The change occured from chassis number jtdfr320100074980 until the end of production, last car built being jtdfr320100076411.

Hope this helps!
