What year base car for a 2zz swap?

That is however an over bored 1zz which takes a lot of effort and cost to get working properly, a well engineered turbo will cost less and will be more reliable in the long run.

Prefer the facelift looks but really if you're going to go for aftermarket bumpers/skirts and bracing etc. Suppose it barely matters. It's the 6 speed box and lack of engine probs which appeal more than anything else.

As a driving experience, I prefer the V6 to anything else, however, convert one and you don't get the money back, so a turbo is an excellent option. I owned a V6 for a number of years and have had 2 turbos, currently have a Haas turbo and it is a lot of fun.
So half decent turbo kit and a few chassis and brake mods, like Nic said, and you'll have the car you want pretty much.

I thought long and hard about all options but decided to go the turbo route using quality equipment. It's not fitted until next week but I'm certain it  will live up to expectations. Agree with Wabbitkilla's statement but it's down to individual preferences.

The main concern with a pre facelift is the oval bore/oil use thing. I would rather buy and then turbo a 2ZZ than have to replace existing 1ZZ with another one!

bang for buck yes turbo gives more. but why is a turbo more reliable. if anything mine will out last a stock engine on a turbo due to the fact it can handle a higher stress value compared to a stock engine.

Not all pre facelift engines are subject to oval bore, I believe that with a regular maintenance routine,as with any car, there should be no problem and I stand by this

Hi,

I've just swapped to 2zz.

Engine,6 speed gearbox, ecu, transponder (important) - £1500
Rogue Motorsport conversion - £1500

Total £3700 (including such things as decent manifold, sport cat, induction kit, fitting my supplied exhaust)

Am I happy? I can't find a smiley face smiley enough to represent my happiness.

Actually I think it's worth making a point that Mark alluded to...

Go 2ZZ if you want rev happy screaming around, giving you approx 190bhp and similar torque to the 1zz.
Go Turbo on the 1ZZ if you want the more relaxed but rapid progress of 200bhp+ with much improved torque in excess of 200ft/lb.

Horses for courses, some will prefer one, some will prefer the other.
Having driving several different itterations of Turbos, they can be very useful machines, they can be quite subtle about the spool up, but offer you more room for change and improvement than the 2zz. In my case the turbo would be useful for calming down the exhaust and resolving my heat soak. Trip to Italy and I was stuck in a queue on a motorway, with the Apexi intake I had a peak of 63C on the intake.  s:crazyeyes: :crazyeyes: s:crazyeyes:

My 2zz is noticably more powerful and torquier(?) throughout the rev range (above 2000) than my 1zz was.

Having said that, I totally agree, totally different driving styles.

Turbo - For driving fast on the road when ever you want. Minor gear changing.
2zz - Driving on the road normally with a planned spurt of crazyness. (Have to drop down 3 gears sometimes to really get the benefit of the engine). A better trackday engine IMO.

For me, the 2zz feels like a 1zz that revs higher. You get more power because of the higher rpm limit but no more torque.

Turbo'd 1zz is massive amounts of torque (double that of an NA 1zz or 2zz) giving you massive amounts of power. Having driven both NA 2zz's and 1zz's on track and road along with many variations of turbo'd 1zz's, the best drivable and most fun combination for me so far has been a turbo'd 1zz running around 10PSI of boost (GT25 or GT28 would be my choice on a stock engine).

However, given the option of any combination, a turbo'd 2zz is probably going to be the winner!

i would agree with more torque being faster and easier to drive. makes me wonder how much more torque im now running as i dont even think about gear changes now to overtake as it just pulls.

Hmm.... well I reckon I will budget about £5k for this, so I think try to find a pre facelift with less than 60k on it, under £3k, and with full Toyota or specialist history, then hopefully it will have been using the correct oil, will have been properly maintained and won't have oval bore syndrome. Does that sound like a decent plan?

I'll grab a used turbo kit or that American one (but I'm not sure how that differs from the other stuff available and whether I'd be better off waiting for something else secondhand?) and I will try to source a 6 speed box and clutch last, which can be done outside of that initial budget.

When I was at Rogue Motorsport, there was a 2001 black MR2 in excellent condition. It was there to have a 2zz engine put in it for someone. Apparently, the guy bought the car for under £1000!!!! off ebay  s:) :) s:)

Check ebay for a car with a knacked engine, deliver it to Rogue and get a 2zz put for £3500. £4500 and Bob's yer uncle  s:) :) s:)

Well, it's one option anyway.

Be wary of the American Turbo kit, it uses the T25 or T28 turbo, which is a journal bearing turbo and can use oil and spool up slower than the GT series - they're more expensive for a reason.

£1000 for a MK3 is a super bargain, you can get a Lotus sourced 2zz for around £1800 with low mileage, worth a punt if it's what you want.

Turbo chargine the 2zz may be interesting, high revs, high compression may outrun the Turbo spool.

A cheapo MK3 with knackered engine would deffo be interesting. I just wouldn't want to take on a job that would be as exhausting/time consuming as rebuilding my MK2 was! Especially since I'd probably have to do most of it on my own, having probably put you guys off of engine swaps for life  s:D :D s:D

yes plenty of turbo'd 2zz's although supercharging them is more common. I believe the head needs a bit of work though as its the weakest part of the 2zz setup (its the con rods that go first on the 1zz).

I think a turbo'd 1zz would give plenty of power to keep you satisfied, especially with your experience of the MK2.

TBH, I've been put off doing engine swaps out in the open ... not fun at all.
At least fitting a turbo doesn't involve such major surgery.

Absolutely. I'd agree with all of that  s:D :D s:D

Might actually be better in the long run getting a car with a screwed engine anyway and putting in a recon 1ZZ rather than take a risk on one already in a car, but again it's the whole swap thing. I suppose it's probably best to turbo the one already in there and then if it goes pop change it then?

I'd say run a standard 1ZZ for a while and look at improving other aspects like the handling etc first. They're surprisingly great fun little cars even in standard guise!!!

Then when you're sure that the engine etc is all good, look at turbo options. There are a number of different kits available.

I couldn't go from the current turbo to a regular roadster. I just couldn't. I'm a speed freak, and need that kick in the back feeling to put a smile on my face  s:D :D s:D
