Does anyone know how much Toyota would charge to supply a new Toyota MRS key and code the key to the car?

It is a Japanese Import.

Thanks

I bought one from CTP a couple of years ago for £90 so I'd assume he can still get them. It's a shame the £90 key is useless because CTP cut the wrong key code into it and wouldn't send me a replacement unit (so I ended up with a normal key and a useless key with the cental locking button on it).

I can't find anywhere else to get them from, have tried a lot international sellers on eBay just for the shell to put my internals in and no one seems to be able to get hold of them.

Hi,

Who are CTP?

I've just phoned Toyota... they have a local locksmith who can supply a new key for £147. I would need to then go to a specialist to get the key coded to the car so the central locking works.

Can anyone advise of a better option?

Thanks

Have you already got one key that works and you just want another as a spare ?

Basically whats happened is the key (metal part) has come loose from the plastic section. The plastic section is broken.

I need to renew the plastic section.

As I'm just buying the car..... the seller said he would reduce the cost of the car to allow for me to buy a whole new key.

Then you only need to buy a new key and swop the internals, which I presume work

True.

Is there a cheaper method? The car is an Import from Japan.

Mine was a jap import one button key which only activates the central locking, it only had one key so I ordered a spare off ebay something like this  m http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TOYOTA-1-SIDE ... 4cf8beb07b m  then had the blade cut by a locksmiths shop, so in my case I now have two keys one which works remotely and one manually, if you bought that key you could then transfer the insides of your old key to the new one.
I ended up only paying £10 for the key and cutting
As the mrs does not have an alarm or immobiliser set by the key you do not have to go to any great expense
Hope this makes sense

Yes it does thank you.

I wonder if a locksmith shop would do this...... I would of thought they would worry that I was getting a key cut to steal a car mayeb.

I'll call around. Cheers

Unless the mrs is different to the uk version, the key Peter has posted isn't quite right. The UK one uses a Toy41 blade rather than the 43 - if you look at your key a 41 will be wider at the bottom than the top

Oh i read through quickly on my phone! I assume that is correct for the mrs then, didnt realise they were just one button

I ordered one of those keys from eBay (as per the one you have linked Peter - Toy43) and they're wrong; as has been said they are lowered at both sides (I think they're for the Corolla). I talked to the eBay seller and he said he couldn't get hold of the right ones and gave me a full refund. Not only are they not the right shape, they're also not as wide, not quite as long, the grove is not in the same place and it finishes higher up the key and on top of that it won't even go into the lock, I even tested by putting the front of my key (with the Toyota logo) and screwing it onto the other part of the eBay key and even the button doesn't line up.
I took the key to Timpson's to see if they could do anything and they said it was a completely different key and there was no way they could cut it.

If you found somewhere that did manage to get them and completely change the shape please please let me know as I really want to get a cheap one and change the internals??

Here's my proper key against one of the eBay 1 button ones (which are all the same from my endless searching):

After all of that I emailed numerous eBay sellers the above pic and asked if they could get hold of it they all said they sold the left one but couldn't get hold of the right hand one. I then gave up...

From a quick look, it looks like the blade number is Toy41 like this rather than the Toy43 but I can only find these in the UK 2 button form.

Before you shell out any money at all (beyond a key blank off ebay) please read:

- The MR-S key does not act as an alarm immobiliser in any way.
- The UK Roadster keys DO, therefore it is best to disregard any info to do with a MR2 key unless its a MR-S being discussed
- The MR-S is always accompanied by a CAT-1 aftermarket alarm in this country (it cannot usually be insured without one)
- The CAT-1 alarm will unlock and lock the doors for you

Therefore -

For an MR-S with a CAT-1 alarm, there is no need for any key internals.
Just get a key cut that fits the lock and you're on your way. Should cost less than £10 for the key and cutting combined.
(You're actually better off without the original key internals on an MR-S, as pressing using it can sometimes send the alarm out of sync with the door locks!)

Note: The above does not apply if you have an MR-S without an aftermarket alarm system which operates the door locks.

In relation to where to buy the key blank - I also have stumbled on this one.
The closest I have found is the MK1 MR2 key funnily enough, which is pretty much the exact shape, but a little bit too wide, so could possibly be filed down at the sides. However I haven't got round to doing this last step yet so can't confirm if it'll work.

Just searched through all my old invoices and found that I bought the key blank from Toyota part no 69503A KEY, BLANK  £7.16 +vat but that was 8 years ago but I would do some research before you order it just in case as I seem to remember there were 3 different keys for that part no

I'm confused. Ha

All I really need is the plastic section. I can then put my key in the new plastic part.

The blade is moulded into the plastic so you can't buy 'just the plastic', you have to get the whole key with correct blade on it and get it cut. The internals you can change over but unfortunately not the actual key blade.

Thanks for the part number Peter, might check with Mr T and see if they can still get hold of it, I'd assume not any more though but worth a try.

That's similar to (obviously to an extreme) trying to re-program a Ferrari key to open an MR2, the systems are different so it can't be done (annoyingly).

It look like it's the right shape, Toy41, wider at the side, pic show right shape of the blade part...
Need to buy by 20... seem cheap enough though... since my shell broke, might be tempted...

Nice find!

I don't have an MR-S any more but I'm sure there are a few people on here that would be interested if you bought a bulk lot!
