My recently purchased Toyota MR2 Has reached 105,000 miles and Ive been told I should think about getting the cam belt done pretty soon.

Can anybody recommend a garage in Leicestershire or East midlands that I could try out?  I'm a young female and Im always worried about approaching garages and being ripped off.

Also, What sort of prices should I be looking at for a cam belt change?

Appreciate any advice.

The roadsters are chain driven - should last the life of the car.

wrong it is chain not belt, but a chain does stretch. cant remember the measurement of links on the chain to check but it is on here.

for the op i wouldnt worry to much as the chain should be good till 150k miles

And it's highly unlikely that a roadster will typically reach 150000 miles.

I wonder where the original advice came from? Not a Toyota or Mr2 specialist I hope.

There you go, Francis, youve saved £250 ish every 60 000 miles by buying a 2! Dont forget the rest of the servicing though, specially the oil/filter changes.

all depends but there is some high millage ones. plus one guy in the states who services his car like clockwork is over 200,000 miles on the same engine that is still going strong. most cars will do over that as long as they are maintained.

Quote from: "Tem"Here's the info from BGB, if anyone wants to give it a go. You should measure 16 links pulled straight and it should be less than 122.6mm. If it's more, replace the chain. And you should measure at least 3 different places. The more the better I suppose.

Then wrap the chain around the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets, one at a time that is and measure the diameter. The diameter should be more than 97.3mm for camshaft and 51.6mm for crankshaft. If it's less, replace the chain.

found on here with a little search and the check - not replacement to be done at 100,000 miles.

To be fair to him, most modern cars have cambelts. I think its because they are cheaper to make, and a good source of income for the dealers. We all make mistakes, specially us lads.

Women dont make mistakes. I know cause my missus told me!  s:wink:  s:wink:

There is no shame in asking a silly question if you were given poor advice. As D!ck says it would be a fair assumtion on may modern cars.

Its a shame the second part of the question has been ignored, ""Can anybody recommend a garage in Leicestershire or East midlands ""

There must be a member or two in your area who can give you good solid advice or even check out the car for you.

Don't stay away just because someone else made you feel silly.

Maybe don't rule him out, most cars actually do have cambelts that the manufacturers recommend changing at around 90000m (thats a guess   s:D :D s:D  ).
Ex.MR2 SMT sadly missed.

I WOULD rule him out, if he knew what he was talking about he would surely have said "find out if it has a cam belt because you need to know if it has been changed...".  Most cars have their engine in the front so having someone giving you advice based on "most" cars could lead you to wondering where your engine has gone  s;) ;) s;)   s:D :D s:D

That reminds me of an old tv programme, can't remember the name, where the 'victim' drives into the garage, the mechanic lifts the bonnet and says 'there should be an engine in here!   s:D :D s:D
