Not had much time to get familiar with the 2 since i got it, but Just had a look at the air filter set up tonight and noticed the tube from the air filter box runs to just in front of the rear nearside light, but it looks like it has got a cone type filter on the end, and is covered in a clear supple plastic..... is this normal ?  s:? :? s:?  and if so how can it breath? is there another air pipe into the air box underneath that i cant see?

No it's not normal. Normally a panel filter in the airbox, with a pipe taking air from the nearside rear wing - you'll probably see the hole where the pipe normally connects to the wing.

Sounds like the previous owner has attempted to fit an induction kit.

There shouldn't be a cone filter there on a stock setup (it's a panel filter in the air box) but it does normally route round behind the light cluster and take it's intake from there (via a plastic covered tube).

Also some aftermarket induction kits locate the cone filter in that area (but in this scenario it wouldn't be covered in plastic or have the airbox present).

Maybe post up a photo so we can see what you're seeing?

Checked it out tonight and its def the stock tube covered with plastic.
So sorry for the false alarm, and much appreciate your prompt and spot on replies ( feel such a doh  s:oops:  s:oops:  ) just a bit keen, and want everything to be as right as possible!
On the subject though, what would you recomemend as an upgrade air filter setup, as i have read about some raising the engine temp etc and what would the benefits be, also cost approx ?

Best  value is a markiii pipe check out group buy section. Then chuck in a performance air filter.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

No problem. Glad you got to the bottom of it.  s:) :) s:)

As Scott mentions, I'm currently running a K&N panel filter in the stock airbox with a Markiii pipe. Been happy with it so far and total cost is approx £120.

Some aftermarket kits have been reported to increase intake temps due to running the cone inside the bay and sucking in the hot air. The exception is the PPE kit which runs behind the battery with a decent cone filter and a heat shield (although I believe these have been removed from the newer models) and these have been proven to give good gains on dyno. However these are on excess of £200 once you factor in import duty, etc...

I'm just finishing off my own homebrew kit based on the PPE (same position, same filter with a heat shield) for when I get my map done but no idea how it will work yet.  s:) :) s:)

If you want the sound too (which really, is a primary reason for induction kits on these cars IMO, as you wont increase performance in any real way with them) - then a homemade PPE style kit is the way to go.

Get a carbon air box from cbs / car builder solutions, and hack apart your existing air box to use the stock MAF housing and sensor with it - cheap as you get. Low intake temps. And all the noise.

ok ive been looking at a few options, and thinking about a foam panel filter and a markiii pipe!
Is the markiii pipe the one in the photograph on page 1 of group buys sold by blue frog ? if so, where does it end in the engine bay ? it looks quite short but i know its hard to tell in photographs !

It'll be just over a foot long and go from the airbox to the ns wing. On the airbox as you look (the face towards the exhaust) at it you'll see what it joins on the left hand side.
