Rusty sub-frame spars

Hi - just acquired a 2006 model and was checking for corrosion. There are three tubular spars underneath towards the front. All are covered with surface rust. Are these prone to failure like the 'cancer bars'  on the mk2 or will they respond well to some smoothrite?
