Usually the result of unburned fuel  being ignited by the heat of the exhaust. In days gone by that was caused by an overlap in the valve timing.
Aircraft engines do it on purpose by injecting fuel after the combustion process to increase power (afterburner) but I doubt you'd get that effect on a roadster   s:lol: :lol: s:lol:  
I think boy racers get a similar effect by switching the ignition off and then back on.
Ex.MR2 SMT sadly missed.

Exhausts flaring flames is ok on the track but ridiculous on the street.
Cute & fluffy animals were definitely hurt during the production of this post, there're plenty more where they came from

No one should fit a flamer kit to any car, especially an mr2 :/
