The issue is that the clutch has already sent you mad.
You just don't realise it.

Have you got this noise sorted yet?  Just curious as to what it was in the end.   s:) :) s:)

It's not yet fixed, but I believe I have sourced all the parts to do so; the work will be done during the next rebuild which is booked for end of Jan. I don't know if I will identify the exact culprit; workshop time is very short so we may just have to replace all suspect parts, but I will let you know. At the moment my money is on the belt tensioner or the alternator.

So after a good strip down and lube up of the entire belt area, it looks like the probable culprit is the one bit we realised we didn't have a spare of, so a new idler pulley is next on the list.

To match my horrible engine bay squeak, a very suspicious whirring pump type of noise from the OSF wheel arch area is developing, and one of the O2 sensors has gone bang.

She is making me feel a little disheartened right now. At least the engine itself is now sorted though.

Hang in there JK, a couple of bits later and Blondie will be good to go for ages. Just think of all those sunny top down miles to come!  s;) ;) s;)

Noisy power steering pumps are common when stationary but the noise usually goes away temporarily if you 'wiggle' the steering wheel. Had it when I bought mine and it was still there over 5 years later when I sold it.
Doesn't sound like a wheel bearing which will be more of a rumble as you are driving.
Ex.MR2 SMT sadly missed.

It's a struggle but it'll be worth when she is in tip top condition once more.

Stick with her JK. She is just letting you know that she needs some loving before a summer of awesomeness.

Hmm, I'm also waiting for the springs to finish corroding the through, the radiator to die (it looks a bit of a sorry state) and the softtop rip to continue growing.
Either way, idler pulley acquired, and no sign of a power steering light going on or power steering failing, so perhaps the whir is just her complaining about not being washed.

Rad is a quick and relatively inexpensive change. If you think it is looking a bit beaten then perhaps it's worth being proactive and getting a date set for a replacement.

A ridiculous £21 on ebay ,£15 postage as well but still a bargain.

So here's where we are at:

• Entire aux belt assembly stripped and lubed
• Replaced poly belt
• Replaced belt tensioner
• Replaced alternator (2nd hand, couldn't afford new one)
• Replaced idler pulley (partially lessened squeak, maybe by 20 to 40%)

Still squeaking.

Don't have aircon, so the only bearing left on the aux belt assembly is the water pump, but when that was stripped out it felt fine, the idler pulley bearing was the only one that felt "crunchy".

Current squeak behaviour:
• Worst when cold
• Starts about 30 seconds after key is turned.
• Squeaks in time with the belt going round.
• Squeaking continues for maybe 2 minutes, whereupon it lessens slightly unless there is load on the engine, which makes it louder.
• Squeaking gradually fades (including when under load) over the course of a few miles as engine warms, into a very faint sort of churring-noise, still in time with the belt, only really audible when idling but I'm fairly sure it's there constantly until the engine is turned off. (video of churring noise to come shortly)

Last thing I can try easily is putting some dry lube on the whole aux belt assembly again.

 s:cry:  s:cry:

EDIT:

Squeak when cold:

"Churring" noise when warm (after 20 mile run):

I am by no means an expert but with the work you have done and listening to the recordings  I would be very surprised if that is something to worry about, I certainly would not.
To my ears that is general rotary mechanical noise and does not sound problematic.

Steampunking is the latest trend in engine swaps don't you know...that or I was trying to stop it from tramlining (sorry).

TALCUM POWDER!

Big thanks to ChrisGB for his suggestion of using French chalk to dry-lube the belt.  I suspect replacing other parts will also have helped and I don't regret it as they'll last a whole lot longer now and I have learnt a bit along the way.

She is now silent as a silent thing. Chris, you are a legend.
