Engine mounts

I am planning on removing the front and rear engine mounts to check them out as I think they are worn.

Bearing in mind the most technical thing I have done is change the oil, is this a step too far for me? If not can anyone give me any advice about how to approach the job. I am particularly worried about the engine moving and leaving me unable to align the mounts properly when I come to put them back on, is this likely?

Any help much appreciated, thanks

A engine hoist would be a very nice to have.

Alignment is the main problem when removing/replacing engine mounts. A trolley jack with some wooden blocks is usually enough to take up the weight and to line things back up. A pry bar or long lever would also be helpful. Careful with your fingers! On refit keep the bolts loose until they're all replaced - then torque them up.

Thanks, is it easier to take them off and refit them one at a time, which I imagine may make any potential misalignment less likely? Or is it actually better to take both front and rear off together as this may give more freedom to move the engine about in order to get the realignment (initially with loose bolts as you suggest) right before torquing up?

I would do one at a time. With the Jack taking the weight and remaining in place, returning the mount should be relatively straightforward. The jack may 'sag' slightly whilst the mount is being checked but a few pumps will return it to the original height.

Hmmm.. i've not long done these, I don't recall them being remotely troublesome, and im not even certain i used a jack, the left/right hold the weight of the engine, front/rear are to stop it rocking during use, but a bit of support won't hurt, and undoing them gradually should soon show if theres any weight on them still.

Thanks for the info guys, I'm beginning to think I might give it a go. What's the best way to reach the front mount?

Thanks again

I'm thinking about some too....which are you getting?

I'm replacing with some used standard ones I have got, I am pretty sure my existing ones are completely shot and need replacing. I seem to get wheel hop (just driving normally), I'm hoping it isn't the side mounts.

Oh ok, sorry. The side mounts look easy. To get to the passenger one just remove the battery and holder. Mine has neither and the mount is right there exposed for all to see

Just replaced front and rear mounts with polyurethane. One at the time. Only needed jack when changing rear mount. No other support. Hardest part was take out old rubbers.

Thank you - 81 bucks isn't bad for the kit, I'll check how much they want for shipping  s:) :) s:)

Does anyone know what strength those polyurethane inserts are, for instance, 60A, 70A and so on?

Tiger deal works well and is a cheap solution, but I'd be in the market for a set of solid yet affordable poly' inserts.

I know Kirk's poly inserts for the engine mounts are 85A and that does seem quite a common stiffness for a lot of these inserts, obviously these may differ, but that would be my guess.

Thank you. 85A would suit me well.

If anyone knows a good source, then perhaps we can get them on board, approved by the committee and then organise a group buy???

I wonder is gt4-play can get them? There are 3 or 4 of us interested in a pair now. Or order a load from MWR and split the shipping (I can't take credit for that idea)

Gt4 pl6qy only sells 2 of the 4. Front and rear i think not left and right.
Don't think you'll beat the MWR price $81 is only £55 its the delivery and fees that are the issue.

Combined shipping is an idea... But I'd want to know the stiffness first; I don't think the MWR advert specifies it.

Also there are kirks inserts. Also shore 75a but the are used in conjunction with stock rubber bushes so work out softer. Cheaper too at $75 delivered.

That is only for two though.

Will speed source be too much for a non track car and am i better off with something else.
