Dear all
I have MR2 roadster, W reg first registered 13th March 2000.  It was making an odd rattling sound and mechanic says it is gearbox on its way out.  He is going to source a 2nd hand/reconditioned gearbox but has asked whether my car has a limited slip diff (no log book when I bought the car) ... how can I find the answer to this pls (I've given him the engine number but this doesn't help him)?  Can anyone help me pls?

If the car is a UK model it will have a lsd

if your car is a Japanese import which doesn`t have an lsd it would be better to replace the gearbox with one that does have an lsd.

Hello and welcome Jane.
One very easy way to tell for sure is to jack up the rear of the car.  And spin one of the wheels clockwise (as if you were driving forwards) if the other wheel spins the same way then it's got a limited slip diff. If it spins the opposite way it's not a limited slip diff.

Rather shocked your mechanic didn't just do that to be honest. It's pretty basic stuff

I don't think that method of testing works on our Torsen LSD unfortunately, I understand it works like an open diff if neither wheel has any traction.

Actually to answer your question directly; any mr2 mk3 gearbox will fit.

If your car is a 5 speed you could consider a gearbox from a later 6 speed car, a nice addition / upgrade for longer motorway cruising. And no other parts required to fit.

If it is a 5 speed, any 5 speed box will fit. A high percentage of owners would never notice if the car has an LSD fitted or not!

Thanks everyone, feel less worried now that I might buy the wrong gearbox!!  Planning a trip to Ireland at start of July in it, so either need to get a new gearbox in pretty quickly or enhance my roadside recovery options just in case ... car driving fine at the moment, just a bit noisy.

As you need the posts and they do need to be legitimate posts!!! You could tell us ( please) that you car is not banana coloured, if it is you will become part of a seemingly ever increasing group within a group.
Remember other colours are available but some are more like Marmite than others  s:wink:  s:wink:

lol ... black with black leather interior : would put up a photo if I knew how to do it!  It's a W reg (2000) with 97K on the clock.  Soft roof has a tear (but not leaky) - and its a bit of a fight to get it back up.  Might think about sorting that next, along with the stereo which is only partly working ... as you can tell I'm not mechanical!

Well you are in luck, there is a guy who replaces the roof for around £300 for a mohair (not plastic) roof. You can even choose the colour !

Radios are very easy to replace, and it's a nice opportunity to get something a little more modern. You can spend silly money on radios but you can also get some cracking deals. For example I purchased a Phillips radio with DAb and USB for iPhones , iPods etc, new from halfords for around £45!

I think you mean Kiwi.
As the all blacks are from New Zealand.
Will let you off because of your considerable maturity.
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
