No expert but if there are no signs of leaking its got to be burning it.
3 litres is an awful lot you would surely notice an oil slick wherever you parked.
How many miles has the engine done?
Did you gut your precats?
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

The main cat can hide the sign of blue smoke. But it does sound like its burning. Try a forte engine flush on the oil it can unstick the oil ring on the piston.

It is probably because the oil control rings have gummed up and the oil is passing the bores, going into the exhaust system and now destroying the pre-cats (if they are there) in which case they will break up and block the main cat, you won't see blue smoke (yet) because the catalytic material is doing it's job but getting destroyed in the process   s:( :( s:(

How often is the oil changed? (be honest)

Not all oil flushes are that good, but rebuild is the only real fix by the sounds of it

Sorry but somethings not right here   s:scared: :scared: s:scared:   .
The car was bought in April and 2 months ago had an oil change. That's 4 months at 3 litres a week and the oil level is checked weekly!  Since the oil change the car does roughly 300 miles to 3 litres?
The facelift dipstick,  as against this one is about 1.3 litres F to L from memory.
Somebody got the pfl measure?
Also Josh please clarify what you mean by almost empty. If it's low on the dipstick and measured on a slope the oil consumption could be quite different from what you imagine.
You could drain the oil and measure. Not a lot if it's nearly empty.
Also what oil did you put in and did you check the oil level after a short run ie. You sure the starting level?
There's a good thread here just recently on high oil usage which might help   s:bounce: :bounce: s:bounce:  .

As Les said, this is classic gunged up oil control ring syndrome. Try the stuff that 'bucks suggested first and use a thicker oil. Otherwise you can live with it for a bit because you know the issue.
Ex.MR2 SMT sadly missed.

Ok Josh so do you measure how much oil you put in when you top up?
Hopefully you will get some input on your 2000 car. The dipstick maybe different to the fl. Have a search on here for a pfl car.
Put in half a litre, drive round the block (hoping you have one   s:crazyeyes:  s:crazyeyes:  ) and check the oil.
You will get some more help once you've a better idea how thirsty the car really is.

when mine was burning oil I found that the offers on carparts4less / eurocarparts meant that I could get 5L for £12 of fully synthetic.  I was buying 4 at a time and topping up every day.

I changed the PCV because it was cheap and I was prepared to clutch at straws but it didn't make any difference.  I also had the engine forte flushed but I didn't do it myself so I don't know how long they did it for.  If I had my time again, I would do the flush myself.

I did read of a test where you let it idle for a while and then hold a 5000rpm.  If the smoke hangs around then it's definitely burning oil however you know that there's no leak so it must be.  Also, I'd get a little puff if I nailed it.

eventually I bit the bullet and got the engine done.
