Hello everyone! This is my first post of many, and what better way to start it all off with the introduction of my "perfect car" which is still under development, ironing out all issues and the final phase of putting on a Luxuary Part kit.

For the purists out there, you might want to look the other way!

What I have basically done is taken a early 2002 high millage MR2 Roadster, dumped the old 1ZZ out and replaced it with an older B5234T Volvo 2.3 T5 turbocharged 5 cylinder engine! and thus the Volvota MR-T5 was born! (in the span of 9 months mind you!) as it currently sits it's pumping out the stock 225bhp 250 lb·ft which even in this stock power form, has transformed the car! I was not expecting such an increase in performance and feel! but here is the crazy part - We weighed the 1ZZ at 101kg ... The Volvo T5?? 132kg! (bare in mind everything that could be taken off has been) I wanted to build a car for one thing and that is to put a silly grin on my face! and boy, even in it's lowest, stock form, it already does!

My plans are for 500wbhp 400ft/lb and there are three things that need to change! the turbo, injectors and rods! At the moment it is being powered by the stock turbo with a set of 750cc injectors (stock are  315cc), with the injectors not even reaching 8% duty cycle! I have a GT35r turbo ready to pop on running low 5psi to 7psi of boost and eventually 18psi to 20psi once the rods have been changed. Why these specific figures? Well I want power ... and I reckon in a car that weighs so little, this is going to be plenty! Anyway enough of my babbling! PICTURES!!

Everything has gone quite smoothly, and because the way the instrument cluster works (sending speedo from ABS sensors to cluster first) speedo is working perfectly, revs are too (the only exception is coolant temp! but that has been taken care of via the pillar pods show in the videos) I will keep this updated as I dive into the bigger turbo and eventually, once everything is complete engine wise :

Well, that's the most I have ever posted but wanted to share what's been done  s:) :) s:)  I might start doing a Vlog on the car soon! but yep, Hi - My names Luke, and this is my car.

Like the look of this mate.
Very interesting.
Can I ask what gearbox you are running?

Thank you! Yes I'm not sure if this has been attempted before!

Gearbox is a Volvo T5R manual 5 speed - I'm not sure how it will handle the power, but as it's pushing far less weight I can't see it being an issue but time will tell! The clutch will have to be up-rated.

Hi Luke and welcome, that looks like it will be one serious piece of kit, love it.
MAF-What a difference a spray makes!!!!!!!!!!!

Will be worth finding out the torque rating on the box for when you turn up the boost  s:) :) s:)

My 230 bhp car is pretty fast I think yours is going to be frightening.

I don't mean that in a bad way either.

Thank you for the welcome!

I will have to do some more research about the gearbox, I know only a couple that have over 400ft/lb - They both run the stock gearbox with the R clutch. At the moment I have both R gearbox and R clutch pushing over half the weight, so i'm being very optimistic!  s:) :) s:)

It did require a bit of alteration to the rear sub-frame though! As they are MASSIVE, big and strong ready for some power!

Just tried adding a car on the "garage" section but no 5 cylinder option!  s:( :( s:(  ha.

The only thing I need to change is the clutch master cylinder - The stock MR2 one does not throw far enough! but i'm tackling that after work.

I really can't wait to turn it up! to think ... 225bhp, 250ft/lb is going to be it's lowest power, it should be insane! It's going to be done in stages mind you - I have got a manual boost controller on it's way, will go from 7psi to 15psi, that should see 300bhp once I've dialed the 750cc injectors in properly, will be spending a few hours on the road and the laptop out! (with a friend) once that's done I will be taking it down to my local Dyno (Courten Miller) to see what's what.

The size of the turbo does frighten me!

While i'm here, brake upgrades! Car has new pads, discs and calipers - are there any bigger ones? or are the stock ones more than capable? the weight is pretty much the same.

Nice, I had plans of doing something similar but wanted to use a Saab B204 but i've gone in a different direction (Audi 2.7 bi turbo into a Porsche Boxster S).

Are you going to run an LSD? Any pictures of the gear linkage?

What on earth made you do that ecsy?

Ha! not sure if it is LSD are the T5R LSD as stock?? Need to find that out. and yes I'll post a few photos of gear linkages and some more detail ones shortly, just in the process of replacing wishbones.

And you could call it ecsy haha! Nah I love the sound and feel of a 5 cylinder engine, I love turbo noise and I'm a massive believer in power to weight! so it suits me  s:) :) s:)

Huge power potential (i'll be aiming for around 500bhp), far more reliable than the Porsche engine and a fraction of the price for a replacement engine if ever needed.

I'm looking forward to seeing more pictures, I do like a 5 cylinder Volvo engine. Someone on a VX220 forum fitted a Focus ST 2.5 engine into one.

This is the same engine, the 2.5 T5 is just a bored 2.3 T5 with plastic intakes, different injectors and rev friendly turbo.

2.3 T5 is just inherently stronger! ready for more boost  s;) ;) s;)  just those pesky rods that need changing as cant have boost below 3k rpm or they bend like cheese - I'll get some more detailed photos up tonight.

This swap looks excellent. Would love to see the detailed stuff. Very impressed that you managed to fit a 5 pot in and got the box in as well. Keen to hear whether that box did have an LSD.
Love the sound of the 5, wouldn't mind one of these swaps myself.  s;) ;) s;)

Nope if you have to notch the subframe it has to be a V6

The 'almost v10' soundtrack of an i-5 sounds better than a V6 imo   s:? :? s:?
It's a tough call.
