Loud-ish tapping noise at idle, disappears with revs.

changed lift bolts.

no exhaust leaks

cam and valvetrain seem ok.

chain tensioner ok.

anyone had this with a faulty VVT sprocket? on either 1zz or 2zz?

Cant think what else it could be...

answers on a postcard please!

Mine did this.

My cam looked like this:

I.e the lift cam was utterly destroyed and scored. This is common on 2ZZs in the elises, and if left the uncontrolled valve smashes it's neck to bits at high revs.

GOt a cam and followers from Dubai (??) via ebay, Had Andy fit it, engine fixed and fine for nigh on 1000 miles now.

The cam wear was only really visible on the lobe, so make sure the cam has been fully rotated with the cam cover off if you're inspecting it for wear.

Thanks Joe,

Cams are all good tah.

It's probably the VVTI sprocket or the lifters.

Was hoping someone on here would have had something similar.

Does the 2zz still have the EVAP vsv? Mine makes a large tapping sound when idle once warm. At first I thought it was a problem with the top end until I noticed it was coming from that valve.
I'm not saying I'm batman. I'm just saying that nobody has ever seen me and batman in a room together.
