You'll need to get the code read with an OBDll reader and then go from there.  I may be wrong but I'm sure if EML is flashing you shouldn't keep driving  s:( :( s:(

What, exactly, was done to remove the precats?

Did you take it to the guy who was going to do it from underneath with the manifold still on the car?  Were the O2 sensors removed before the bashing commenced?

Usually, when a problem crops up, it's related to what was done just before....

The sensors weren't removed but it drove fine for about 50 miles after

Lots of things are possible.
As has been said, eml flashing is a serious fault ... stop and don't drive it till you've diagnosed and fixed it.
Many things could be wrong, especially if he did the precat removal on engine without removing the sensors.

The only place to start is getting a code reader on, then work from there.

+1 On Wabbitkilla's advice. Bashing and sensors don't mix well.  You may have an intermittent fault.  As advised above, get a code reader (really a most basic tool with one of these cars) and see what it's showing.  The advice on here is generally very good, so it's worth taking heed...

I'm taking it back to the garage on Monday but that means driving it 30 miles to get there, will use a bike until then

It's not the cheapest, and not the most expensive but I've found this one to be great;

If you have a smart phone you can buy a wireless reader for not much cash.
I use a blutooth reader with my galaxy s5 and the Torque Pro app.
Less than half the price of the above and fine to.just read codes.

Is there a database for codes? To look up the code to find out what it means?

If you google the code it will tell you but again if you have a smart phone app it does that for you.

Yes he let me look inside to make sure I was happy, all 3 amigos snapped off just doing that, so I dread to think what happened if I took the whole manifold off

The port is under steering wheel above the accelerator pedal.
How did he flush it out if it was on the car ?

While I'm waiting for a code reader I thought I'd give an update, the misfire hasn't happened since but I did notice that it happened on a very wet morning and no problems since in the dry, I do remember me having a Peugeot 309 gti with the same problem years ago but never finding out what it was, has this happened to anyone else?

What i meant was you said "It just fell out the bottom"....

Does that mean they were already falling apart and just fell out?

I thought the precats had to be "knocked" out if still intact in situ?
