Hi,

Just in communication with a seller of an MR2R who tells me the EML is on. The fault is apparently the light itself?? Is this horse manure or does this actually happen?

s:lol:  s:lol:   This is a first on the forum I think.
I suppose it is technically possible, poor earth or something but a code reader might provide a more accurate assessment.
The seller makes it sound suspect, better to tell it like it is.
Ex.MR2 SMT sadly missed.

The seller said that he was told that was the case when he bought the car, took a mechanic friend who hooked it up to an ODB2 reader and confirmed she's right. Sounds suspect to me too.
Car has only done 52k miles apparently....

Code reader time.

I cannot recall ever seeinga code for a faulty eml light.
I will wager a full English pound. That it's not horse manure but Bull sh!t.

Got to question this one. Likewise never heard of this.

Plenty of lights not working have come up before.

Something fishy here methinks.

What's wrong with buying a members car from here?

99%+ codes are for O2 sensor faults so if it's cheap you want then it may be worth a gamble but at least get a code reader on it and maybe post any code on here.

I'm wondering how it passed the last MoT if the MIL is permanently lit up.

It can't possibly be the light but, from what's been said (which could be BS), then I'd worry about this being an ECU problem. And that could be expensive and/or time-consuming to repair.

MIL?

The engine management light is not an MOT failure as far as I know. It's an advisory.
When I was looking to buy a couple of months back, it was one of the things that came up on MOT searches constantly.

MIL = Malfunction Indicator Light, a commonly-used term generic term for any warning light in the instrument panel, not just the CEL (Check Engine Light). Do Toyota have their own names for warning lights? Apologies if I used the wrong term, but I'm really a lot more familiar with Honda terminology!

You may be right, now I've done a quick search. In 2012 any MIL illumination became an advisory and, at some point since, certain specific reasons (non-environmental) for an MIL illumination became an MoT failure. However it appears that some MoT test stations are unable/unwilling to distinguish the various causes of the MIL and so default to fail... Which presumably could be challenged. So that part of my comment was wrong.

But I still wouldn't buy a car with a warning light on without knowing the reason... lambda sensor good, ECU bad!

A light out does not cause a code. End of. There's not even a warning for when a light bulb is out anywhere on the car, why would it know if a tiny little bulb welded to the instrument panel is out? Total and utter BS. You could, for the sake of proving a point, go and plug in your code reader and show him what's REALLY the matter with the car.
...neutiquam erro.

My Rover 75 (2000 Vintage) had that on it (and yes, in case you wondered, the 2.5 V6 that doesn't suffer HGF).
