It is the front top mounts that go as they have a bearing etc in them that allows the mount to rotate. The rears are fixed so dont need replacing.

You wont know if you need new fronts until you take the shocks off and you can have a good look at them.

You may well need new front and rear boots (which come with the bumpstops) at £53.90 for all 4 from mr2-ben.

You take a chance if you go for the konis as they may still be too harsh, especially with the polybushes. Also, kybs and teins would only be about £390 so £170 cheaper than the koni combo....

ah! .. OK so the shopping list as it now stands:

2X Front Top mounts - £118
4X dust with bump stops £50
Koni Sport Dampers with HR springs - £566

Grand Total approx £734 PLUS LABOUR & re-alignment etc..

Point taken about the Koni's being too harsh... is there a nice little graph (something like Josh did for the Engine swaps/costs and power thing) that shows all the different suspension setups for harshness to comfort etc?

Am I right in assuming that the list with "1 = most comfortable" highest number =" most harsh" is as follows:
1. Toyota Replacements
2. KYBS
3. Koni Sports
4. Yellowspeeds
5. BC's
6. MeisterR's

It does kind of look like the whole suspension refresh is much of a muchness in terms of cost - the determining factor does seem to be the desire for adjustment and particular ride.

This is the only ref document I remember seeing but this is about spring rates rather than damping.

 l viewtopic.php?f=46&t=5018 l

Like the idea of trying to rate them but hard to do and very subjective I reckon!

Heres my thoughts;

Toyota Replacements or KYBS- same rate. (Choice of either lowering springs or stock springs). Some people reckon the tein springs are their favourite mod.

Koni Sports- the advert says plus 25% minimum higher damping than stock (I have not heard anyone mention them on here, not sure what that means?). You may still need top mounts and boots with these whereas all the coilovers do not need these so the konis are potentially pretty expensive.

Yellowspeeds BC's MeisterR's -people on here like all of them but you can get the BCs with a choice of 4/6 kg rates or 5/7 which gives more options (rather than having to buy additional springs and changing them over).

Best to try and sit in a few cars at dong day I think before you decide?

meister ride better than BC whichever spring rate you choose.
Its not all about spring rates but how it interacts with the dampers.
Not enough info on yellow speed we have only had a couple of people fit them.
I know koni yellows have been suggested but again only a few people have fitted them.
For me personally as you have already polybushed and taken a lot of slack out i would go for KYB and Tein springs.

Again i never regretted getting my meister R. What you loose in comfort you gain in handling and feel unless the surface is truly awful or you have them set to hard.

Make no decisions until you have tried a few different options.

I have never been in a car fitted with Meister coilovers, so I am in the dark as to what they do to create this superior "ride".  Care to illuminate me?

Ask shanazzle. He has been in mine and has bc on his.
I think andy ayres has tried the lot too. So ask him.
BC 5/7 are considered too hard for the road. Meisterr 5/7 arent.
Most people go for 4/6.
BC are possibly better on track.
I like my setup and only find the ride uncomfortable over poor surfaces huge potholes etc.

Confirmed; MeisterR on 5/7 was more comfortable on the road than my BCs with 4/6. But it was a very limited drive in Scotte's
BCs have the reputation to be slightly better on track, but this is unconfirmed really. Probably quite unnoticeable.

I wouldn't exchange my BCs for MeisterRs though. The cost wouldn't be worth the difference in ride.

Quote from: "jvanzyl"wow - totally hadn't considered changing the seat. I'm assuming that you buy the seat with the seat rail - but is there anything you have to do to get the porsche seat rail to work with the toyota floor? Do you need any kind of adapter?

Me either!

I have a set of RX8 seats in the shed... must investigate

Also what are peoples opinions on the yellowspeed for road use?

Shnazzle &  Scott.
That's really interesting....  Do you both have the same tyres?

A well sprung seat compensates the increased stiffness. I figured turbo Carreras are super stiff yet never saw complaints about the ride.  So it was an obvious solution to my problem.

Yup. Both on the AD08Rs, same sizes as well I think.

I will have to get a ride in your cars - on a bumpy road - consecutively next time we all meet.

BCs BH-RA (rear rubber top mounts), 4/6 springs, AD08Rs in 195/50/15 and 225/45/16, stock FL alloys, front and rear strut braces.

All else stock as far as handling goes

Not sure if this is a useful comparison at all,
but found in my mini upgrading from my BC springs to supposedly stiffer swift metric race springs improved ride and control all round
Could be a halfway house option for you ?

Right!
So having had some great drives in cars with MeisterR's on the weekend - I'm actually happy with the concept of going with Coilovers (I've not had a go with oem refresh and Tein -S though).

I was doing some more googling and found that there are actually more variants to the Yellowspeeds! (to make matters harder! - literally I think.)

So the new order of things as far as I can tell is:

1. Toyota Replacements
2. KYBS + TEIN-S
3. Koni Sports
4. Yellowspeeds
 a - (Pro Sport)  m http://www.tarmacsportz.co.uk/GB/DYNAMI ... S023_.aspx m  ( I know GT4play has them cheaper)
 b.  (Pro Drift)  m http://www.tarmacsportz.co.uk/GB/DYNAMI ... D006_.aspx m
 c.  (Premium Competiition)  m http://www.tarmacsportz.co.uk/GB/PREMIU ... C016_.aspx m
4. BC's
 a. R something
 b. R something - more expensive
 c. R something = Even more expensive
4. MeisterR's
4. TEIN/ KYBs etc for the mega rich..

shnazzle

Sounds silly as I have BCs but...I'd opt for Meisters over BC. Although, I should give MEisters a proper go sometime on different settings to see where the weaknesses are.

Well my impression of them was that the MeisterR's were just so much better than my seriously jarring setup...

I'm going to have to do some research on the different options of yellow speed.... apart from height adjustment and dampening control..what are the "must haves" for coilovers?

I hate to say this.
I hope that is just your high mileage shocks and springs that are making your ride so jarring and not those polybushes.
