Quote from: "Carolyn"It's a lot easier to detail the car underneath once the engine is out.

Thanks Carolyn - you're basically advocating taking the engine out prior to starting work on the underside?

Only if you're set on doing the engine.  You can get at the whole of the engine bay and suspension and rusty bits in the corners so much better.  You can do plenty of useful stuff with it still in, but I always take the opportunity to detail the engine bay and surrounds when it's out.

Well... I guess I kinda am... it's what I think I need to do.. it's just a bit daunting in terms of having never done anything like it before.

There are some basic admin things I need to have in place before I start the engine removal (making space/ building the separator wall so the kids can't get near it when it's raised up etc.. ) but when I'm ready for that I'll get started on it.

If it's running fine, only using a little oil and generally behaving itself, I'd leave the engine until it starts to really twist your arm.  It's so good to know that there's a spare one there when you need it.

B7 S4 is a fine choice. Had mine for five years and found it a very entertaining daily drive. A Milltek exhaust is a very worthwhile addition despite the price. The sound was one of the best of any car I have driven.

I feel really privileged to have had the chance enjoy a n/a V8. Make the most of it!

Fair enough...I guess I was looking to get it in so I could progress to the next stages really!
It's absolutely fine to cope with though...

Yeah I've read about the miltek- I thought the Remus was expensive!  I shall honestly do my best to enjoy it! I could do with some tyre recommendations and security as well if you are able?

Milltek rusts at the welds.

I ran Dunlop Sport Maxx RT on mine after the original Contisport 3 wore out. I felt the Dunlops felt better but it's much less sensitive to tyres than the MR2. Both suffered from curbing damage at the lightest touch but it was on 19" wheels so lower profile than standard. You're supposed to change all 4 at once but I did it pairs with no problems.

I never had any security problems. I think the S4 flies under the radar most of the time. Few people realise how big the engine is or that it was faster around the TG track than an E46 M3!  Did you get a manual or the Tiptronic?

Ah cool ok! It's the tiptronic.

Mine was too. Apparently it's the better of the two. I did like the sport mode!

OK so it's taken me a few months (:< >:) but I've finally managed to get the car up off of all it's wheels, and the wheel stored in my nice new handy wheel rack! :)

Let the de-rusting and general refurb begin!

And yes Simon the frunk will be taken care of and painted as I think you've pointed out for the last couple years running...

jvanzyl

OK so I've decided to start on the front.. basically get all the plastics out, then see whats what... and what's corroded etc etc..
My time is quite limited due to parental/ job responsibilities but I figure if I can spend up to an hour once a week it's pretty decent going.

So - first up, the frunk! Spent 10 mins trying to get all the foam off of the connector switch so I could see how to disconnect it, but eventually got it "clean" and have remembered to start using "baggies" with a permanent marker - though I think I may start using post it notes inside the bags just in case.. I'm also going to use a numbering system on the bags so I can basically work backwards when it all goes back together.

I've undone the two bolts that seem to be holding the frunk in - but it's not coming out so I'm guessing there's something on the other side attached somewhere.. At the end of the day the plan is to remove all the plastics so I may as well do the front bumper next and that'll give me clear visibility to see what else is connecting it.

Carolyn

That's all the bolts.  Needs a good, severe wobble and pull to get it to shift if it's been in there forever.

Come on John even i can get the froot out.
At the train station car park whilst waiting for HWMBO.
And get it all back together again in time to chauffeur her home.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

:-) nice to hear all the helpful advice from the expert and the peanut gallery!

It's occurring to me that I'm going to need to store all the bits and pieces as they come off the car- I might be able to get away with storing most inside the car.. will have to see!

Hahaha! I know what you mean though, I've got the front bumper and frunk plastics etc off mine at the moment, it's surprising how much space you need to store bits when you start taking them off.
