How come you took the subframe off?
Mini pallet with 4 caster wheels. Jack underneath to support engine and use crane to life car (remove front bumper).

It's all explained further up in the post, it's a very entertaining and informative read, especially if you're planning on having a go yourself.

Doh sorry will have a read. I've already done the 2ZZ swap.

Read the whole thread. Nice car, lots of money spent.
Still don't see the need for the subframe drop but done now.

I would try using the crane to lift the car when putting it back.

Jack under the engine and lower the car over the engine.

That was the original plan- however for the sake of a few bolts which then enabled nice clear access for the drop I thought I'd remove it.

I was going to have gotten the hubs and drive shafts separate from the subframe-  but for some reason I couldn't. So I figured the best use of time was to just move the whole thing out.

2 ways of doing it. Gearbox off and leave the subframe in or leave the box on and take the subby out.

So just a quick one tonight.
Wire wheeled the ARB, and a section of my subframe that had bubbles in the paint work. Kurusted the ARB, and first layer of primer on the subframe.

Tomorrow is theoretically a full day that I get to spend on this- I'm not too sure where to start with the old engine in terms of taking stuff off- is there a generally accepted order to this stuff? Or is more a case of larger bits followed by smaller bits and then finished off with the loom?

Finally, happy to report that my engine dolly is working well. The floor is pretty rough, but as long as you keep a hand on it, it moves along well and is pretty steady.

Take the coil-packs and their wiring rack off, leave them to dangle.  Then disconnect the injectors and remove them along with the rail.  Disconnect the throttle body connectors.  Remove the inlet manifold.  Disconnect the rest of the harness and put to one side.  Take off the alternator.

I can't recall, but it looks like the new engine doesn't have the oil heater and piping.  That could be 'cos it's an MR S or it's just not there.  If the connecting port on the cylinder head is there for that plumbing, you'll need to swap the oil heater and plumbing over too, so take all of that off.

Take the throttle body off the inlet manifold and give it a thorough clean.  You might have done this before, but now is an ideal time to do it again.

Everything you take off goes on the new engine in reverse order.

Pick the better of the belt tensioners and use that one.

Awesome! Thanks Carolyn!

Right, progress so far.

Intake off
All ancillaries transferred, just hunting down small clip and bracket things...

Second primer coat on ARB and subframe done, and first layer of grey cost on the subframe.

Going to start cleaning the throttle body the intake manifold now...

Then it'll be onto transferring the gearbox and putting the new flywheel on...

Ok end of evening update.
Throttle body cleaned, and on along with the intake manifold.
In doing this I realised that there was loads of gunk around where the injectors go in- fortunately I have experience in this!

I shall dig out my injector cleaner tubing adaption for the vacuum cleaner...

Anyway- one of the rustiest things on the car are the "bow tie" hand brake cable holders.. so I FINALLY took them off, wire wheeled them and did a first coat of kurust.

I'm debating what colour to paint all the things that I derust... Kind of like a way of bookmarking my progress by changing the colour as when it all gets dirty again it'd be nice to know where I've gotten too easily...
Current options in the paint department are the hammered blue and hammered silver, possibly plain grey and then bog standard black..
So imagine the ARB in hammered blue so  it'd match the brake calipers!

Tomorrow will hopefully result in me getting the flywheel on along with the gear box... Following which it'll be fluids time!... Oh wait.... Probably best to do that when it's in the car!

I like your idea of colour coding your progress.

Ok so I finished at 1230 last night..

Managed to get the gearbox off (very satisfying as I've never done that myself before) and then I got the clutch off, out seems ok, but will let Carolyns check it over before I put it in the new one.. I also took theold flywheel off, as I wanted to see how it went on before I tried to do that with the new one.

Progress so far has been rather epic, that's because someone rather epic came round! (Carolyn!!) Flywheel is on, clutch is on and I'm about to mount the gearbox!
