Thanks all!
In currently waiting for the baby to fall asleep and then I can try and lift the engine...
Early attempts failed as the steps are tight and foil with the rear edge (front) of the engine bay, so you can't get it towards the front of the car enough.. I'm going to have to combine with the Jack I think.

Wouldn't it be easier at this point to rake the 4 bolts of the rear crash bar out and slide the engine in from the back on the dolly? Might save you a fair bit of tilting here and there to try to get it it to fit in.

Edit: ignore me. That's what you've done haha
...neutiquam erro.

I shall comply ;-)

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Well done
Cheers! :-)
Trying to do the gearbox/driveshaft seals now... They're well and truly stuck!

Scratch that- found the perfect method!
Insert a spanner and then hit it from the side

Right both drive shaft seals in - I think..
I'm convinced the left side has a slight angle on it. .

Hit a bit of a wall last night at 1230...
Totally went on too late and lost the fun factor... I shall try and adopt a more "restful" approach.

Both side mounts are on, throttle cable on, starter connected, rear coolant is on (wasn't fouling anything so figured might as well).

Got stuck with the front mount - couldn't get the top right of the three bolts to bite properly- in hindsight I should have put that on before putting the engine in, but oh well..

Soooo I'm going to take a bit of a break until I feel better about it all- plus I need to spend more time with the family.

Now, what did Auntie Carolyn say about slowing down and not being in a hurry??

Well done on your progress so far John. I am impressed that you have found some of it fun, looks like a right pain to me!

I am sure you will get there in good time.

Awestruck looking at all that work. wish I could relate, in the sense that I wish I could do this kind of stuff too. What I can relate to is not wanting to down tools when you're on a roll, but getting knackered and becoming a stranger to your other half and child. Kick back and crack open a tin, well earned I'd  say  :)

That's exactly how things were going- I don't want this to get in the way of my family, and that's what it was doing- and I was rationalising is as necessary to have it done before work started...

So tonight I got:
The front engine mount on and torqued up.
I've not managed to convince the rear subframe to leap up of its own accord onto the car... I'll keep talking to it.... You never know.
I then started on the rear subframe bolts as they were a bit crudded up. Used a wire brush on them and then poured a load of plus gas onto them... Should do the trick of I leave them for a bit.
Also put first coat of black onto the handbrake"bow ties".. I've been putting a Simmons grey primer on, and although it comes in a bigger can I must have had to do like 4 coats till I was happy with the coating thickness. The Halfords zinc primer comes in a smaller can, but you really only need two coats and it goes on well...

Tomorrow I head up to Roadster rescue HQ where Carolyn is letting me loose with a plumbers torch on my Audi as it needs the top control arms replacing....

In the past when I have painted small parts, I used to put them in the oven after it had been just used but now switched off to bake the paint. I would leave them there until fully cool.

I never hard any problem with smell or setting things on fire (in case you were wondering!) but always thought the finish felt tougher afterwards and that I had sped up the curing process.

This reminds me I need to measure the spare subframe to see if it'll fit in my drying oven...

Interesting!
Not too sure how my wife would react to me loitering with a bunch of metal things that I've just painted when she is cooking ...

Ok so today was a bit of a bust with regards to sorting out the Audi round Carolyn's...I managed to shear off the bolt head for the top control arms
[emoji33]... So yeah... That's gonna have to go into the main garage to get sorted...

Anyway, this evening I tried to rescue the car maintenance side of the day by getting the drive shaft seals further in by using a stud thing which Carolyn lent me and then when that proved too wide I switched to the end of a file- I was being pretty gentle and I reckon they're in now. :-) could possibly go further if needed though.

I then managed to lift the subframe up into place and put my nicely cleaned up bolts in - couldn't for the life of me find the torque settings for them though??? Anyone know?
Manuals were rubbish...

I then took the rear mount off the subframe and did some cleaning up of the bolts before I put the new one in.

So I'm hoping to get the rear mount on next, and THEN I guess it's the gear linkages then driveshafts followed by electrics and plumbing and fluids?

59ft/lb or 80Nm for subframe bolts
