Ok so the quick sharp jerk the crankshaft is not resulting in a click... It's really hard to turn to be honest, should I put the oil in first??

In gear?

Oh.. Didn't think of that

Ok it was in first..I put it in second and tried to turn it, it's now stuck..
I'm not sure about doing all this without fluids...

Might be some crossed wires there John, if you're setting the chain tensioner using the pulley then you want it in neutral don't you?
I usually put mine in gear and bump it forward as I just find it easier but that's when it's on the wheels.
To be honest if you've moved it and not heard the click I'd be tempted to reset it and try again, did you lubricate it a little first?

60% of the time it works everytime...

jvanzyl

No idea...
I put it back in neutral and tried spinning it round again but still no click..
It had a fair bit of oil on it..
I'll take it out again (3rd time) and then I'll have to leave it..

Maybe just sit tight, I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than me will be along soon...

No worries man :-) thanks for the input- I've just redone it and I THINK I made it click... Not sure because I was making such a racket trying to turn it..

jvanzyl

Ok I reckon I've done it, and learnt something in the process..
I think the chain goes tight when the chain tensioner clicks in to place!!!!

Call the midlife!

Well done! As far as I knew it keeps tension on the chain for cold start and until the oil gets warm when it eases off for "normal" running.

Struggling a bit there?
:)
Reset tensioner. Put it in, slowly turn the shaft in neutral. If you do it slowly you'll hear the click.

But yes, if the chain suddenly went under tension (key word there) then the tensioner has extended :)

The manual actually tells you to turn the crank counterclockwise to unlock the pin, then clockwise to let it release. I've never done this. It's always clicked
...neutiquam erro.

jvanzyl

Thanks man :-)

Ok evening round up...
The positives:
- I'm getting pretty good at doing the timing chain tensioner
- oil is in

The negatives:
I think the timing is out.... And then I'm pretty sure I made it worse.
How many teeth do you have to slip before cranking it round results in a valve and piston connecting?

Joesson

I don't know about how many teeth 'out' before contact between valve and piston. But I am certain you need to find out and correct the situation before you progress.

Hey yeah, I've been in touch with Carolynne who has kindly provided me with some detailed next steps....

nope.  The ratchet is to keep some tension while the oil pressure gets up, which puts more tension on.

I was three quarters right then, with  hot oil giving more pressure than cold.[emoji38]

Have Harvey explain it to you. :)  Oil pressure goes down as oil warms up....

Right, this evening's update:
Charcoal canister moved out the way.
Crank set to the zero mark.
Cylinder 1 loabs pointing at each other (kind of).
And I believe the timing marks are lined up now on each other????

Sent from my Moto G (5) using Tapatalk

jvanzyl

In the hope that the timing is indeed fine, I've put the cover back on, charcoal canister back in its place and done some corrective taping on the cables...

I've also checked the gaps on my spark plugs that'll go in one day to 1.04mm.

Next up will be the gearbox oil, which I'm guessing I'll need my tubing for...
And then it'll be coolant, and the exhaust stuff...
ONE DAY, this thing will turn on and you'll all be deprived of further episodes in this journey of discovery!

Timing is spot-on.  Panic over.  Saves me a 100 mile round trip! :)

Note to others: Don't turn the engine with the tensioner out.

Very useful pics, perhaps Patrick could insert them at the appropriate spots in the 'how to'??

Just checking, you used sealant when putting the cover back on?

I know I'll be reading all through this thread again over the winter when mine is in bits and definitely be buying John a pint or two come Ding Day.
