Timing is spot-on.  Panic over.  Saves me a 100 mile round trip! :)

Note to others: Don't turn the engine with the tensioner out.

Very useful pics, perhaps Patrick could insert them at the appropriate spots in the 'how to'??
I know I'll be reading all through this thread again over the winter when mine is in bits and definitely be buying John a pint or two come Ding Day.

Just checking, you used sealant when putting the cover back on?

Sent from my SM-G950F using Tapatalk
Nope- just the standard rubber gasket me.

Coolant going in...

So end of evening summary:
Got pretty much all the coolant back in, bar what looks like max of 0.5L - so I'm not expecting to have to top it up too much when I get the engine going...
I did give the coolant tube that goes into the big tunnel by the firewall a good squeeze which got rid of a fair bit of airlock.
I then got the exhaust and cat into position,  and I did notice a fair bit of soot etc around the flanges etc so I gave them a bit of a going over with a softish wire brush.

The other thing I noticed was the two bolts holding the exhaust to the cat seemed to be quite unevenly bolted down.... I've plus gassed them tonight and maybe tomorrow I'll be able to turn the looser one tighter, but I'm suspecting I might need a new gasket there as I don't think I stored the whole setup properly and the cat was hanging by the two bolts and it seemed to be at quite an angle when I took it down.

Apart from that, I'm going to try to put the manifold on tomorrow, plug in the ECU and battery and try and turn it over a bit and then put the sparks in and actually fire it up.... Eeek.

Obviously if it does actually turn on there's still a LOT to do in terms of finishing putting the car back together and then getting the alignment down in terms of the Camber bolts etc.... Oh yes and tax and MOT and insurance....

So some excellent news on the Audi front.
Got it MOTd today and the sheared bolt fixed for £120.... So not too bad considering it can be a half day job sometimes...

They gave me the old bolt back...

Thank you very much!
I'm glad others are getting something from it!

So the summary of the evening is that, the car is running :-)

I've now got an awfully large list of bits to put back in place which is likely to take a while... THEN when it's all back together I need to get the legal stuff done and the alignment etc.. ETC for all this is likely to another month I reckon..

Oh and I found a little bag labelled "gear clips" in my box of stuff.... So I guess that'll mean taking a bunch of stuff out again to get to the gear cables... Doh :-/

And possibly got to buy some nuts to go onto the manifold studs as I had to use el cheapo standard nuts in place of the norm as for some reason the bag that was supposed to hold them all didn't...

Right - off to bed! Happy dreams... :-)

That' s not the first time I've seen "German" bolts shear. The theory was likely correct but it didn't work in reality.

So tonight's update. The summary is that it was SLOW.
I started off with putting the gear clips on which I forgot to put on earlier, this required taking the battery and holder out. They went on quite nicely at least.

I then started on getting the brakes back on and remembered that I needed to rub down all the clips...

This then spiralled out of control and I ended up doing the ARB brackets

The brake calliper holder

Oh and the manifold heat shield..

Which is kind of why I wasn't in the engine bay putting more stuff back in...

Call the midlife!

You'll be giving Bernie a run for his money at the next show and shine!

Well the kids parties and work travel have final abated (temporarily I'm sure) and I managed to get a couple of hours on the car tonight.

I carried on with the kurusting of the brake carriers and then thought I'd fit my ARB since it was all nice and painted and ready... Then I noticed that there paint had been chipping!! [emoji19]

Now I TRIED to be sensible with my paint colour last time, so this time I thought stuff it I'll have fun... So I went with hammered blue [emoji3]

And then carried on to the handbrake bow ties...

Anyway- my rear brake pad clip thingies have seen better days.. Anyone got a part number for them?

I then spent the rest of my time cleaning up and brushing down the ARB, rear suspension arms and rear suspension strut bolts and dousing them in plus gas and WD-40...

Next time I'll hopefully be able to paint the carriers and then fit them along with the ARB... AND also fit the suspension bolts and torque them up..

It's been a bit awkward trying to finish off everything... Hopefully I'll be able to get back into a groove at some point.

I am planning to wire brush and paint my subframe this winter.  You've started something here, looks like hammered blue is the new grey!
