Halfords sell some cheap double sided tape for number plates that actually works, if you want to avoid the holes.
I've been using this for years. Never failed

So I ended up doing DIY till about 11 then quickly popped out to try and do a bit on the car..

-Sorted the number plate for now
- Put the frunk boot in
- Rethreaded the alarm cable through it and put the alarm holding plate in
- put the alarm back in and connected or
- put the spare wheel back in

Need to put the frunk cover back on... That's still hanging up on the side

So that leaves two little baggies on the side for the front nappy and the front bumper!

Plus the wheels and erm... Yeah the rest..

You've been on here for how long? And your alarm still isn't moved and spare flipped?
Tsk tsk

Neither is mine.
Want to make something of it?
Are you feeling lucky punk?
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

The summary of the night is as follows:
YAY IT'S WORKING! YEEHAA!!
"CLUNK!" followed by engine dying and not starting.... By which point I was actually quite a long way from home at 2330...

Fortunately the AA came and got me...

So it's back in my garage where one day I'll work up the guts to try and figure out what went wrong and if I have the stomach to do it.

At the end of the day it worked really nicely albeit briefly and I really enjoyed it.  Just really sad that it's looking like tickets for the engine.

AA guy said there was no compression when I tried to turn it over..
Going to bed now

I had my fingers crossed but it did sound exactly like the Celica we had which also had no compression. Especially when you mentioned milky gunk.

:( Absolutely gutted for you mate. Let's hope it's just a head gasket issue and the components are all still salvageable

Oh dear, very sorry to hear this. Hopefully a good solution will become apparent soon.

Good job you have that diy to take your mind off it....

I feel very bad about this....  you rebuilt it in my shop, after all.

Do you want me to come and have peek under the cam cover?

That was my next thought, that guilt would hit you.
These things happen and there's no room for blame or guilt.
Besides, we don't even know where it went wrong!
I'd still very happily rebuild mine with the both of you. Or either one of you for that matter, given how much you've taught John.

Heart goes out to you guys

Gutted.
Fingers crossed for an easy and quick fix.

The engine WAS an unknown quantity...

But it does sound catastrophic, I'm afraid.  Either a rod or the timing gear??

Where did the bit about 'milky gunk' come from?

I've spoken with John and offered my spare, the use of my lift and hopefully a local volunteer or two to do a weekend engine swap.

Thanks man,
Guess I'd get a trailer and take it up to Carolyn's in that case... Just need to find a weekend etc etc...

But anyway, that's for the future any way!

With the front bumper off, we can tow it with our A-frame.

I love this place.
Sad news re engine.
But, the the team spirit and willingness to muck in and help a fellow 2 enthusiast cannot be bought.
