2005 1ZZ piston ring update

After some in depth investigations on the UK MR2 Roadster Owners group, we think we have come up with definitive (sort of) information of when MR T applied the final update to the piston rings on the 1ZZ to try and sort the oil burning issue.

It appears that the key chassis number is JTDFR320300074980. That car was fitted with engine number 1ZZ2335488 as far as we can tell. Any engine after that should have the new pistons. That's factory engines, not reman (remanufactured short blocks) which also have them.

This is extrapolated from a Toyota Technical report which shows the update was implemented in July 2005. Hopefully this will provide some comfort to those lucky few owners that have later VIN numbers that mean they have the updated piston rings.  

Personally I discovered that as my own cars VIN number ends 74978 I missed out by two cars.....  s:cry: :cry: s:cry:

Yes, I'm afraid that 'stuck control rings only affect PFL cars' is a myth.  I've now come across 2 FL engines with the problem.  Keep yer oil changed peeps.

Going to check my vin but have been saying for ages that it needs to be a late FL model.

The change was implemented on the production line in July 2005.... I missed out by 2 cars....my car was registered in the UK in January 2006.....  s:cry: :cry: s:cry:    s:cry: :cry: s:cry:

VIN ends with 75341

But oil changes will still be completed at regular intervals..

Good thing I spend a fair whack on oil (although I am late for my 6 month change)

Mine was fitted with a replacement short block under warranty by Toyota in 2007 and confirmed to have the new pistons.

I have a 55 plate (registered September 2005) with the following Vin,

JTDFR320500073766

My last 5 numbers suggest I dont have the latest engine but if you go from the first number mine would appear later - 3205 VS 3201

Does this mean I do have the latest engine?

Afraid not Brian.....I'm told the first part of the number relates to the plant it was made at.... Mine starts 3203....it's the last digits that count   s:cry: :cry: s:cry:

Check you engine number.  On a flat part of the block casting above the gearbox.  Need a mirror to see it.r

So many people do this so you arent alone.
I would be pretty confident of an 06.

Not sure that applies (06 cars are ok). Mine was registered June 2006 and is OK, but I'm only 180 on from VIN number where things improved.

I've just bought an '06....can someone describe a bit more accurately how to locate the engine number. Cast into the block?  Upwards facing or sideways....?

Vertical.  Stamped in top of the block on the left facing to the left. need a small mirror.

Easiest way is to look on your V5.
