Oil pressure relief valve

Does anyone know if its built into the pump internals or an external bolt-on part. Either way can it be accessed to see if its stuck. Any advice on this would be a big help

I understood it was built into good quality oil filters.
As in, it is better to pass dirty oil than no oil at all.

I may be wrong, but that is my understanding.

Really in the filter, well every day's a school day.
It's a cheap and easy thing to swap out to see if that's the problem, so seems a reasonable place to start

This article seems to disagree. Perhaps more googling is required.

I would expect to have a pressure relief valve on the pump to limit pressure to 70 or 80 psi, AND the oil filter or filter housing to have a bypass valve for clogged filters.

I may have confused an in filter bypass for a pressure relief valve.

It's part of the pump.

Edit:  Didn't answer your other question.  The timing cover has to come off to get at it.  Not exactly easy access.

Ah  sbollocks bollocks sbollocks , not a job for me then. I'll do the filter and check the wiring on my gauge but if that hasn't sorted it its off to the mechanics. Thanks all.

Whats the prob? Too much pressure or too little?

wotugonado

Too much, yesterday it took ages for it to drop to correct pressure after warm up, then when i accelerated even slightly aggressively it maxed out the gauge. I'm gonna engine flush it, do oil and filter change and check the wiring for the gauge, and that's about the limit of my capabilities so then it'll be off to the mechanics if that doesn't correct it.
I'm totally surprised that we don't have oil temp and oil pressure gauges as standard, you would never know there's a problem as it doesn't feel any different, but reading up on it can cause real problems if not sorted  s:? :? s:?

It does take while for pressure to drop, as it takes a lot longer for the oil to warm, compared to the coolant.

I had to ditch my first oil pressure gauge after about six months, when it started to peg out for no apparent reason.  So I'd suspect the gauge before the engine.

So I did the oil/ filter/engine flush car feels good but the gauge is still maxing out. I disconnected it from the sender and it just sat at max pressure, so I'm tempted to put in a new sender unit as ive suspicion it's that as it looked corroded.

I reccomend spending money on good branded gauges.
For example my no name ebay boost gauge would spike to 12psi.
My PLX bosst gauge maxs at a solid 9.72.
My oil pressure takes about 15mins to drop to around 20psi.
At start from cold its well over 80psi.

With no signal, it should be at zero pressure.  So I suspect the gauge.

My present oil pressure gauge behaves exactly the same as Scotte's.

I've ordered  a cheap gauge and sender unit to swap over.
If this sorts it then ill look at better gauges as these are unbranded and were lumped in with the turbo kit when i bought it.

What sort of temps do you get?

I'm not running an oil temp gauge, Scotte.

I probably have too many sensors but if your going for it you may as well go all the way.

So Scotte, do your sensors sense the temperature and pressure of a Golden Yellow liquid, or is that as Black as as your car?

I get temps around 190 -200 on a decent run out slightly less if i keep off the boost, but where's the fun in that  s:twisted:  s:twisted:

If that's centigrade, that's way too hot and if it's Farenhiet you are not trying hard enough.

Where are you turbo guys picking up the oil temp from?  Oil filter (sandwich plate) or just after going through turbo?

Mines taken from a mocal sandwich plate, i had a generic one but it leaked so paid extra for a known brand.
