Cutting out when hot

Apologies if this is in the wrong place,  but wanted the advice of the mechanically minded.

My brother has an e36 328i that cuts out when it gets hot/up to temperature. Any ideas what might cause something like that to happen? Hoping it's just a sensor!?

Completely dies, or won't idle?
I think you can read error codes on e36 with BMW INPA.
You need a PC and a cable from  m http://www.cable-shack.co.uk m .

Could it be crank position sensor?

Not sure if it's the sole cause of the problem, but in taking the throttle body off to gain access to the crankshaft sensor and plug, we noticed a rubber pipe had split quite badly. Some kind of air return that went from near the MAF to the engine block?! My brother knew what it was.
Taped the pipe up with some electrical tape, just for diagnosis purposes, took it for the same drive/journey as the car took when it cut out....it was fine! Hoping a new pipe will fix the problem.

We shall see!

Does it take a while to start from cold, by a while I mean a few seconds rather than immediately.?

No, straight away, on the button!
It's only when warm he said it starts to sound a bit ropey and cut out

I don't know how you do those things on an e36
