Does anyone know of someone who I can trust to work on my MR2 who will not charge dealer prices? I have to get a gearbox fitted and or maybe a clutch.

I am either based in the midlands or essex normally. Any suggestions would be greatfully received.

Cheers

Somewhere like Fensport are Toyota specialists but god knows if

1) they would do the work
and
2) how much they would charge!

That was my thought, but guessed it might be worth a try? Still, you know about Fensport and if you say they might not do it, then i would take your word over mine anyday!   s:) :) s:)

Your right to suggest them, I just doubt they would do it.  Fensport can be pains in the butts.  If they say they can do something that will give X amount of power then i'll believe them but getting help from them is like pulling teeth   s:roll:  s:roll:

They will proabably be able to suggest someone that can do it for you  s:) :) s:)

EDIT - In fact im sure they would just suggest someone, still the thing about the '2 is... its not really that fancy and the work wouldnt be THAT hard.

Why not take it to a transmissions specialist.

I took my Mitsubishi Pajero to one when the transfer box ceased. They did a perfect job & I got a 12 month "no argue" warrentee.

Probably do a better job than Mr T as they deal with these parts day in day out.

TDI would do a good job, but SilverMSD2 is right a good gearbox garage would be more than fine.  The MR2 is a disposable racer, I doubt the gear box is that hard to change even with the mid engine layout.

Its MORE likely someone over on the US board might be able to tell you how hard, a few people there have done box swaps.

I know for a fact ahT Fensport WON'T change the box for you. When I spoke to the guy there about doing some work on my Mk1, he said that they rarely take on outside work unless it is a good opportunity for some development work at the same time. Other than that, not a chance. Shame, cos they know what they are talking about.......  s:roll:  s:roll:

Although not really in your locale, but give Millway a call (01264) 336344 (huh, is it worrying I know that number OTTOMH?!) they've certainly enough MR2 experience to do the job, and even if too far away for you, they can still give you a recommendation elsewhere.

Where abouts in the Midalnds are you when you are in this neck of the woods  s:?: :?: s:?:   Can't remember if you have said whether or not the car is driveable. I am waiting for some information from my dealer. Rates per hour vary tremendously depending on where the dealer is located. One might charge £60/£70 and another £45.

yes the car is drivable!

I am working in germany, but my car is by the english office in Coventry (drove it a thousand miles home last weekend. before it promtly broke on the A14 on sunday night).

The dealer is saying that it is 12 to 15 hours work. (Actually from my investigation the book is saying 9 hours to strip and rebuild a gearbox). They want 1200 pounds labour for this. Thats over 100 quid an hour the cheeky gits!!

So will get a second hand box, and pay someone trustworthy to fit it for me. I dont think a dealer will fit a secondhand box for me!

Paul

Ps Im In leamington Spa in the Midlands, or Wickford in Essex. (Or Deggendorf Bavaria..where i had the fucker serviced last week!)

If it's Nick Whale in Coventry he has just sold the dealership to Listers. When he was given the sole Warwickshire patch he made lots of promises to Toyota, which he has failed to honour
Murley Auto in Stratford upon Avon charge £45 per hour plus Vat. By the end of September the dealer in Stratford will be Listers with a new building currently under construction. Of course Murley also used to have a site in Warwick.

At worst, say 12 x £45 + VAT = £634.50 plus parts £??????

Roger,

Very usefull Thank you.

I have spoken to the dealer in Stratford, there hourly rate is 40 pounds. They have agreed firstly to give me there opinion without charging me. Then they will remove the box, see if its just bearing damage or worse. If worse they said they would have no problem on fitting a second hand box for me. Obviously without guarantee. I would be much happier to let a Dealer loose on it than a normal garage.

Nick Whale not only have a very expensive rate, must they also quote more hours than is says in the manual!! Con merchants!!

Cheers again

No problem. I'm glad I was able to help in your hour of need  s:!: :!: s:!:    s:!: :!: s:!:

I have always found the people at Murley very goodl. Unless MrT allows them to continue with sevice-only work it looks like I shall have to find another dealer. Dale Wilde, the Service Manager, is a very helpful guy.
