So, i broke a front spring, managed to get a good used assembly from a breaker - is it an easy swap? shock spring mount all as one - any pitfalls to watch out for? advice?

If one spring is broken I would check the others just in case they are damaged or weaken. It would be worth replacing in pairs also as The mileage / age use will be different to the others fitted to the car.

I would agree with Steve.
Springs themselves aren't expensive.
Change in pairs at a minimum although depending on age I'd would change all 4 may as well do shocks too imho.
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

All good advice above about changing in pairs and also considering replacing the shocks.
The amount/ time for doing the job would be much the same replacing springs and/or shocks.
If you fit a pre used / pre assembled spring and shock assembly "from a breaker" you will likely be creating an imbalance in the suspension and subsequently the steering.
It depends on what you are using the car for, if low speed around town at 30 mph you may never notice the difference.
Elsewhere, it will likely be a different story and you will be wishing you had chosen differently.
At best, if that is the route you are taking, you would perhaps do better replacing both sides with a pair from the same broken car.
Better new springs each side.
Better still new springs and shocks each side.
Optimum new springs and shocks all around.

The top mount bearing will need cleaning and repacking with grease.
For individual component replacement:
You will need a set of spring compressors.
The shock has two flats on the top end that must engage in the top mount.
The top nut on the shock is a Nyloc type specified as needing to be replaced. From Mr T they were around £7 each when I asked. Other suppliers are available.
