Gear Bearing replacement cost.

As I understand it the actual bearing isn't that expensive to replace but it's the removal of the gearbox, etc to actually get to it and replace with new.  Does anyone know approximately of labour time and costs please?  Sapphire was rather grumbly yesterday and this morning her bearing noise seemed noisier. :'( I can't ignore it now @jonbill  :-\   The noise goes away when I press the clutch.

Sounds like a classic clutch release bearing running dry, cant help on prices sorry but look at a clutch replacement as the box needs to come off anyhow. Box bearings well I got shafted when the input shaft bearing/seal needed replacing , some 400 and box was off already for the clutch, I was very bitter on this as told bellhousing was full of oil but had no drips or sulphur smell from burning oil.

Hi Norman, the clutch was replaced only 10/15k miles ago. Sorry to hear about your bad experience. :'(

It sounds like the input bearing if the noise goes away after the clutch is pressed and the car in neutral. Before I would get any work done I would change the transmission fluid first. I have had it where my transmission sounded like it was the output baring when the car was in motion but once I change the fluid back to GL4 the noise went away gradually to where it is non existent. The racing fluid that I used expired quickly.
Sometimes its also improper oil level.

I still fancy the release bearing, not unheard of to go dry even after such a short time. Box has to come off for either the input shaft of release just lets hope its the simpler. £300 sounds a very good price if the input shaft as that requires a big strip down of the box.

The history of this car is known and understood.  It had a new clutch, throw-out bearing and oil not long ago.  When the car changed hands, Jonbill pointed out the bearing noise (which was slight at the time) and it has got worse (as they do!).

Replacing the input shaft bearing is not a massive job (once the gearbox is out).

It's still a great little MR S.

actually its the silver one I've still got that had the bearing noise, Jane's blue one was silent at that time. But yes, its a new LUK clutch.
Annoying!

Chilli Girl

I wouldn't say it was silent at the time but it's certainly got noisier. It's ok though I still love her & once again like yesterday's trip on the twisties she made me smile ;D That's what's important. ;)

well I couldn't hear it, but quite possibly I wouldn't hear it now either. the advantage of decrepitude :)

For the past couple of weeks the gearbox bearing has become louder and louder and finally I thought, I can't ignore this noise any longer, it was doing my head in!  I was worried I was doing damage to the transmission.  @Carolyn had very kindly offered her expertise to let me take it over to her for investigation but (a) it wasn't fair to land the problem with her especially as she has lots to do on her MG that she's working on and (b) I was abit dubious to drive her too far as Sapphire was becoming to sound really rattly and gear selection was proving difficult from first to second.

Her gearbox has now been removed by Jon @mr2garageswindon who's identified that it is indeed the input shaft bearing.  Sadly, the gearbox oil did not look great possibly water contaminated. Her gearbox is being collected tomorrow and taken to a gearbox specialist in Bristol who will give her a good refurb, new bearings, etc, whilst it's apart.

So I'm 2 less for a couple weeks or more.

Anyway, will keep you all posted.

If and when your transmission is finished get this transmission fluid.  Redline MT90 is good but in my opinion and the opinion that have used both the Amsoil GL4 is better that it is significant enough to recommend over everything else.

I strongly believe the choice of transmission fluid is crucial to its overall life and performance.

I just phoned for an update on your gearbox and the Renault master gearbox they are doing.
Not the news I was expecting to hear that they are in the queue waiting to be done, hopefully stripping on Monday or Tuesday.
Normally if I send them a gearbox it is back within 4 days or so.
They have been very good on all of my previous jobs with them, I guess as they are good and they are busier than usual sadly we just have to wait.
It will be worth the wait in the end.
Meanwhile my 2 post ramp is tied up so i did a clutch on the floor yesterday all good fun.

Chilli Girl

Disappointing but what can you do?  Car is not going anyway without it :'( Thanks for chasing.

Sapphire's gearbox has been stripped down today.  Not good news at all.  So I knew about the input shaft bearing, now it seems that some of the teeth have been chipped on the crown wheel amongst other bits!  They also mentioned that the gearbox had been apart in the past. Awaiting pics from Bristol tomorrow via Jon at @mr2garageswindon.  Jon's been great keeping me updated during the last fortnight.  To say I'm gutted is an understatement.  How much all this is going to cost me I have no idea and I'm feeling pretty raw and disappointed about the car this evening.  If I'd known I was going to be faced with gearbox problems so early into Sapphire's ownership I would've walked away but that's a risk you take when buying an old car with very little history. ::)

Sorry to hear Jane. I hope they are able to repair it at a reasonable cost and have it back to you soon.

To be perfectly honest @Dev I've fallen right out of love with her tonight  ::)

Hey Jane, buying a second hand car can be a lottery, especially an old one like ours are, I feel your pain, you buy in good faith but sometimes shite happens, hopefully it will be back soon and meeting your expectations
