I rang my local MR2 to book the 2 in for its 20k/ 2nd service and nearly fell off my chair when they told me it would be £209.80 I then asked what they would do in addittion to change the oil and they told me that it is very in depth and that they take the brakes apart and clean them out and loads of other things. I asked how much the service would be without the oil he then gave me some blurb abouth the dealership being part of the sytner group and that they only use fully synthetic mobil 1 I asked how much less it would be if I supplied my own oil he then said £56 less making 153.80. My question is having looked at other threads but not finding a definitive answer is fully synthetic oil ok for the MR2 engine? Secondly what is the best oil for me to provide?Thirdly how much do they do in this service especially given that he told me it would take 1 1/2 hrs??

Hi,

In reply - Mine cost me £105.57 back in 2001 (20k)

£134 for my 40k

£113 for my 60k

and the most expensive one so far - 80k for £168

As for Mobil one, that's fine I ran that for some time and had no problems, just stay away from Castrol RS it's too thin when it gets hot.

As for oil - I use Shell Helix, the Toyota garage use this, but I get it some what cheaper from my father who runs a Range Rover Dealership.

£56, sounds a fortune, 4 litres of Mobil one off the shelf is about £30 (Halfords) without a special offer..... I suspect they are getting it in for something like £7-£10 for them same 4 litres.

Take your own in and save some money.

The Shell Helix I use is a blend, which seems to agree with the engine.

Best of luck and quotes some of my prices, they are from Listers Toyota in Lincoln.

Cheers

I'm not sure whereabouts you are, but prices seem to vary considerably around the country.  I was charged around £220 for my 20k service last October (2004) but there are only two Toyota dealers anywhere near me, they're both members of the same group and hence have a monopoly and no need to be competetive on price. My 30k service last month was just over £100.

Having my 20K (2year) service tomorrow.
Prices vary from MrT to MrTy as I got 3 prices:
Toyota World (Tamworth) at £267.71
Hartwell Toyota (Wolverhampton) at £210.00
Westlands (Stourbridge) at £205.23
All including brake fluid change and VAT

Looking at the extra they should do at 20K over 10K

Replace key batteries, check power steering fluid, check coolant strength, inspect plugs, check operation charcoal canister, check fuel lines, connections & vapour controls, check driveshaft bolts, check brake linings, clean and adjust, full 4 wheel alignment check (extra to adjust), replace brake fluid

I guess that whilst in themselves they are quite small, they all add up.

BTW I paid £118 inc oil for 10K, oil was £27.88 + VAT for "Tank Performance 5W3" code OCAST4. Anybody care to guess what that is? Castrol from a big tank??

I wonder if they actually carry out all those checks especially the tracking one  s:? :? s:?

Good point. Their worksheet they give you should show it as having been done, so if you have any doubts all you can do is make a fuss and see if they can provide proof. Guess with tracking they should have some form of printout, or you can ask for the readings.   s:wink:  s:wink:

The prices I was quoted for the 40k service varied even more

I was quoted
£298 at Star City, Birmingham
£243 in Leicester
£160 in Nottingham

so Wendy dropped the car into Nottingam, they gave her a lift to the office and picked her up later. Excellent service and £138 cheaper than Birmingham.

My 20K service was done at Toyota World, Tamworth yesterday.
Very pleased with the service, and the replacement of my alloys was done at the same time without having to show them my wheels first.
A pleasant experience for a change.

Don't know why but my car feels quicker.

i asked why they didn't do this on mine as there was no tick in the box for tracking, i was told that this was only done every 2 years unless a tracking issue was reported. I'm not worried as i've had no issues at all, but could be worth while asking in future for it to be done

With regard to the tracking point I asked when I took the car in today and was told that they only do a full 4 wheel alignment which costs 1 and a half hours labour and that they would not check it without authorisation to carry out the 1 and a half hour alignment. Needless to say I declined and will have the tracking checked elsewhere as I think £90 - £100 is a bit much for the tracking to be checked (I am not sure of the exact labour rates at toyot world bristol)

Be careful, this isn't just the normal Quikfit tracking.

I haven't had it done, but the 4 wheel is a specialised laser jobby.

BTW from the posts above, and my understanding of the service sheet, they are supposed to CHECK it every 2 years within the service cost, alignment is EXTRA.

If as you are saying, outside a service they would only check it if they had authority to re-align, I would hope they wouldn't charge the full price if no adjustment is required. You might like to check, especially if you think there is something come to your notice that makes you think it is out.

I would assume in a service you would be given an option. But, (hoping they are not shysters, and it really does need doing), if you knew it was out, you would probably get it done any way.

I had my 4 year one done at a local garage and they charged me £105 all in and I trust them a damn site more than I do Mr T.

I see no reason at all to take it to a main dealer if you have a quality trusted mechanic in your local area.

Andy is obviously happy, but those with a warranty might want to read the small print before they take this line of action.

Collected yesterday afternoon and on the way home discovered they hadnt done the one thing I had asked them to which was adjust the handbrake. Now have to ring them, complain and probably book the car in all over again which is a real pain as the dealer is a real pain to get to both from my work and home so will probably have to go for a saturday which in light of past experience will mean i will be lucky to get it done before christmas.

But then what should I expect four virtually £70 per hour

Presumably you didn't pay for this on your original bill, because if you did, I would let the sh1t hit the fan.

If you didn't you have a wonderful case for getting it done for nothing. Take it as high as you have to, and I always recommend starting off "nice".

Got the follow up courtesy call from Toyota world yesterday (before I had chance to ring and complain) with the chirpy gentleman asking if everything was to my satisfaction I mentioned that I wasn t particulary happy about the handbrake not having been adjusted. Apparently he had the job sheet in front of him and could see that this had been requested. He then apologised and said that they will book it in to be done and will come and collect and then deliver the car which is a good result as the garage is on the opposite side of bristol to my work and home and therefore a good 35 -40 minute trip each way even outside of rush hour. So provided that they do it when it goes back in not too bad a result over all.

I've just called a few local'ish dealers for prices on a 20k service.  Results are:

Leicester Nissan (Toyota approved) - £190
Leicester Farmer and Carlisle - 180
Lincoln Listers - £192
Nottingham Inchcape - £184

All the above were not aware of the 4 wheel alignment check until I asked them to confirm if it was included.  All of them checked and confirmed it was included (the adjustment is extra).

Luckily, my closest one is the cheapest so it's booked for next Tuesday.

They are collecting it from my home address so I've asked that the vehicle inspection report is done in front of me before they take it away.  Last year I got a scratch which I can't 'prove' was them.
