So - it's taken me pretty much about a year - BUT I've finally decided to get this off the ground!

I originally bought my car for £2k and it had done 116K (yes having spent some time on this forum I totally got shafted - but whatever, I can't do anything about that now)

Subsequently I have done my best to change job, be a husband and a dad, maintain the house and find some time to play with the car!

Current status of the car (as of 20 June 2020- this section will be updated as I go along:
- 143 000 miles on the car
- many many miles on the newly rebuilt engine on engine number three!
- New front and rear engine mounts, with kirks inserts - got tired of the because race car feel.
- Toyos all round
- Front strut brace (Ultra Racing)
- Copy of Corkys Breastplate
- Devs Door bushes
- New catalytic converter
- Mid brace (Matts TTE)
- FL mid under brace
- Poly bushes all round
- Wrapped Zero exhaust manifold
- Nice new rear subframe & clutch (fitted 2015 I think)
- Goodridge brake lines
- Markiii pipe (taken out as part of an experiment)
- TRD Panel Filter ( gotta give it another clean)
- Hard top & fitting kit
- Lots of FL cosmetic changes
- Lots of service history (& I intend to keep it that way!)
- screaming chickens
- debadged
- new Sony radio
- MG ZS arm rest
- Cobra twin exit exhaust
- Screaming Chicken badge for steering wheel
- Metallic blue brake calipers  :-) :-) :-)  daring to be different here!
- Navy blue soft top
- TEIN Monosports with EDFC II
- Competition Clutch lightened flywheel

Still to fit:
- eManage Ultimate - fitted and now removed whilst I diagnose O2 sensor errors..
- Extra wheels (currently slowly refurbing.... about to give up)
- Sub system
- AEM Intake - needs new filter
- PPE manifold and sports cat - needs refurbing due to pitting etc..


Current list of things I should probably do:

-  - Start rubbing down all the exposed metal surfaces and treat them with some kind of anti-rust formula and preventative treatment (suggestions welcome!)
- Replace blown bulb in heater dial (right side)
- fit the oil pressure gauge done
- fix the leaky sump
- fit the JL speakers


Current list of "wants"
- Some kind of sub woofer system (MBQ AW-600D or USW-10)
      - Have bought MarkIII's under dash sub box
- multiple bumper repaint as none of them are in the best condition
- Spoiler repaint as it never was painted properly
- C-one body kit, with side skirts in dark blue
- Rear Ultra Racing  Strut brace (not that it does anything but because then the back would match the front!)
- Retro fitted HID optics with appropriate lenses (mishimoto minis jobs)
- C-One style vents- in dark blue


Current things I'd like to "customize" my car
- I'm going to make my own tonneau covers (I've found some decent pics of real ones which I intend to replicate) that will match the new hood.
- Fit Colour coded C-one scoops
- Find the appropriate blue colour middle arm rest..
- Find more of the appropriate colour leather and retrim the door arm rests in the same colour..

Current list of things that I want to learn how to do in my ownership of this car:
- How to tune the engine using a piggy back ecu
- How to rebuild an engine - thank you Carolyn!
- How to refurbish allow wheels - in progress...
- How to bleed brakes - missed out on that..
Change brake discs and pads
paint calipers
How to fit coilovers
How to swap and engine.. done twice now..

I will try and put some pics up some of the things I get up to when I get a chance!

Soooooo I managed to get out this evening to buy more fish food and do some grocery shopping- it just so happened that halfords (the primary reason I offered to do the shopping) is right next to the pet shop  :-) :-) :-)

What I wanted to buy was some of that tiger seal stuff to stick on my new midship badge...(at the time writing this I've just remembered that I didn't buy that.. Damn) anyway, I found myself in the car Audio section staring at either the pioneer nice touch screen job or the Sony one (WX900BT) the Sony one won out as I reckon it's got a bit more power and I think it's a bit better made in terms of durability etc....(time will tell!) Oh and it's£60 cheaper And on sale!

Add then whilst the guy was getting the box i ended up in the car cleaning section with the 3 for 2 deal...(still no tiger seal) and bought some leather care and the tar remover stuff from AG... And some interior cleaning thing.

Oh and THEN I did the grocery shopping!

Got back and refitted the child seat for Louis (the one twin who WILL sit in daddy's race car) so I can take him to nursery tomorrow.

Then I checked and tripled checked the oil and decided that it needed topping up (450ml). I may have put a bit more in there but I think it's OK... That basically means over the past year of ownership (8000 miles) it's had two oil changes (beginning and mid year) that it's consumed just less than a litre of oil in that time.

I have no idea if that is good, bad or normal- buy the car gets driven 5 days out of seven at least. And if it stays at that rate then I think it's perfectly livable!

EDIT- need to find the wiring harness before Saturday! Hopefully there will be a halfords near work that will have it in stock... Not sure if I will need anything else to fit it...

Attended Dong day today, which was hosted by Simon and his wife.
GREAT DAY!!

 With the help of every one there I managed to debadge the car and fit the chickens  :-) :-) :-)



Also managed to fit the head unit and mic!

The mic blocks the view of 140mph....think I'll be ok with that though...

Rear debadging was not as successful as the front....end up putting to much pressure on and stripping some paint  s:-( :-( s:-(

Will remove the bumper and spoiler and try my hand at a respray...

So I've refitted the old rear bumper that doesn't have the ducktail drill holes, the paint work is in better condition- and for some reason I'm actually liking the absence of the spoiler!

Anyway- I've started sanding down the ducktail so that I can try and respray it, depending on how that goes I'll then try my hand at the ducktail ready bumper.

I'm more than likely going to source some of those c-one vents, but I need to figure how to clean the drains with them fitted first!

Work started on sanding the rear spoiler- I've been using wet and dry 600 grit which is more than likely to fine for the keying for primer... But oh well!


Then started spraying the primer- I'm using halfords  filler primer.


Came back to the spoiler in the evening to find that the drying hasn't really gone to plan!


I'm assuming I just wait 24hrs and then resand along the cracks and respray... What I will say is that the spray can doesn't go very far! I'm going to have to find an alternative cheaper supplier if I'm to do the rear bumper and wheels...

I also finished de rusting the front under brace I bought.
I had some hammerite hammered silver which could go directly on without the need to prime, so went with that! Not so sure I should have... Don't think ANYTHING on a car should look "hammered" ...oh well! It'll be underneath out of sight!

So a quick update then.
1. Still getting cracks on the spoiler, have bought done different primer and will try that now.
2. Driveway is almost complete- this will secure my little roadster for a while now, so won't be forced to get rid of it! Yay!
3. Flip key ring arrived:




Quality isn't exactly great... But the plan is to get the blade cut today and try and transfer the blipper thing.
I'm also going to look into a rubberised spray, and 1cm midship badge to glue onto the back.
Maybe will look at some small lead weight to make it feel heavier too...

Bit annoyed now... timpson guy pointed out that the blade was different and so couldn't used.
He also said that they weren't allowed to cut eBay ones anymore due to them snapping off in the ignition to often..

So it looks like the only way this works is if you cannibalise your existing key and then transfer it... Will have to work on the bravery for that...

Sounds like you have "taken one for the team" with the flip key.

Do toyota do a blank that would fit a flip key format but work in a 2? At least that way the metal would be trustworthy.

I cant see you being able to use your existing key in a flip key though.

Are you supposed to cut off your old key so the rest fits in the flip key box?

Yeah... Think so!
I had another read of the spyder chat thread. It seems like the way forward is to buy a "timpson" approved new Toyota key. Get them to copy my existing one,  butcher it to remove the blade, then reduce the width of the blade so that it can be inserted to replace existing blade in the flip key. .... I will ask how much they will charge for a new key to be cut, not keen on spending much more on this though!

Does the transponder have to be on contact with the metal of the blade to work?

I dont think the transponder has anything to do with the blade, it just has to be near enough to the sensor to work.

I tried to have a flip key for my old vw camper but it never worked properly. If you held the original key near the ignition then it would start as it picked up the original key but if you moved the old key away then the immobilizer wouldnt let it start.

OK- well this will move forward so long as I don't have to irreversibly mess with my existing keys... I'll try and get another quote tomorrow.

Today has been about body kits!
I've tracked down a genuine and in "good condition" TTE kit ( I think- it's all plastic, so there's not much else could be??) which is currently in blue, the idea will be to sand, fill where needed and then respray it in 1D0.

I've also resumed the work on the ducktail spoiler:

The spray filler appears to be rubbish, so now the idea is to use Bigboys plastic filler... I've done some test bits without using the hardener- so we'll see if it works or not..

Hi pal did the badge come off easy enough ?  Im taking mine off this weekend and dont wanna go down the road of taking paint with it.

The badges usually come off ok with some dental floss slid underneath, there will be a "shadow" left as you can see in the picture that is hard to clean/polish out though.

Hi pal did the badge come off easy enough ?  I'm taking mine off this weekend and dont wanna go down the road of taking paint with it.
Hey yeah badges are easy to get off with a hairdryer and dental floss... It's the residual "shadow" which you need to clean off which presents the problem.
Basically tar and bug remover is what you're supposed to do- but I in my genius decided to create a "buffer" with a drill and put too much pressure on an let it heat up to much with the friction.

If you do it by hand you should have no problem!

So I got my car back from the garage today. They fitted the new rear polys, and put in Fuchs race pro, and redline mt90.

I couldn't push it on the way to work today due to the deep cut in my rear left- but my immediate impression of the polys was WOW.
the car is so much tighter even at slow speeds. The garage said that the bushes which you couldn't really see in the hub's were so badly corroded that the pin literally dropped out when they went to replace it! I my car is 15 years old- I would recommend to anyone getting all their bushes renewed as they get over 10 years. I can't wait to get the new tyres fitted and start pushing it to see the real difference.

No real opinion on mt90 yet... Didn't feel much of a difference.

This arrived in the post today though!  :-) :-) :-)  it's to replace the horn badge.


It's not perfect but will do the job.

With the rear pads now down to 25% I decided to replace the discs and pads all round- used one the numerous 25 or 30% off discount things that euro cat parts constantly plague me with and have gone all Pagid.

In addition, due to my brake disc covers rusting so badly- the back right now rubs on a hard left turn- I've decided that I'm going to do all the brake work myself and at the same time remove the offending brake covers. I've also decided to paint the callipers.

I've done some reading and it seems like all I was missing was the copper grease, metal paint and the wind back tool.
Halfords have gone expensive on me and the cheapest tool they offered was like £30+ so I shall be getting something cheaper off of Amazon!

Halfords did however come up trumps with the paint! I've decided against possibly better taste and judgement and instead of going for hammerite smooth red- I've gone for hammerite hammered blue  s:-D :-D s:-D  ..... This maaay not work out. But my thinking is that the blue might go with the midship wheel caps..

I'm hoping this will all take me about 3 hours a corner as I've never done any of it before...

Work has finally started on the brakes!  s:-D :-D s:-D

I got stuck with the 2 nuts that enable the second part of the cailper to come off - so whilst the plusgas was soaking in I decided to start with the painting!
I'm a bit of a fan of Silver with the occasional blue accent...hopefully this will work out!
